日本東京長者平井秀和日前號召日本老人吃福島縣生產的大米，以幫助當地農民打破福島大米被輻射感染的傳言，同時確保日本的兒童吃不到該縣的大米。
　　
日本去年三月發生大地震和海嘯，引致位於福島縣的福島核電廠發生輻射泄漏，自此國民抗拒福島米，即使福島縣出售大米前農產品必須接受核輻射測試。六十八歲的平井秀和決定發起長者吃福島米運動，希望幫助當地農民。加上輻射對長者健康的影響不及年輕人那麼大，長者吃光福島米就能保護青少年的健康。
　　
東京老人院訂700公斤
　　
平井表明以義工身分參與，不會從中取利，他已與福島縣的大米批發商簽訂銷售合約，呼籲其他長者通過傳真和社交網站向他訂米。平井表示迄今收到一千七百公斤大米的定單，當中東京一間老人院買下七百公斤。
　　
福島縣每年生產二十四萬噸大米，以往秋天收割的大米在翌年二月就會售罄，但到了本年二月仍有四成大米滯存在貨倉。

The Japanese get my highest admiration this time. They are doing exactly the right thing. Children are the future of the society and seniors, on the other hand, have nothing to lose by eating the rice.

輻射對長者健康的影響不及年輕人那麼大 because the 長者 would probably die before the long term effects of radiation even start to show.
