Second trip to Mexico in just over 3 months

These two shot with Leica M6 Classic Titanium finish with matching 35mm Summilux pre-asph Titanium made in Germany on slightly dated Kodak Plus-X film.

Guatemala? I've never been. I've never been to South or Central America.

Cuba is next up on my list for this summer, before I spend a couple years in Asia traveling.

Mexico is magic. I love the places and the people. I will go back at least once a year.

chobit, the ones I posted are pretty much all the ones I took. I only threw out a few duplicates or incorrect exposures. My main interest is street portraits so I didn't take any landscape or food or other "normal" travel photos that you usually see.

The only type of photos I took are ones where I talked to the subjects and take their portraits.

From the other post, Your comments suggest to me that you are fairly experience with street photography, so I am actually expecting to see better picture from you.

A few things here to explain:

1) I already said that my type of photography is more like street portraits or documentary, not the modern definition of street photography. In the other thread I explained why I am not so interested in street photography.

2) I have a lot of experience in taking street portraits. I can easily break through barriers with strangers and take photos of them. Many people feel intimidated approaching strangers so they end up taking a photo from far away or take a crappy candid. Some of them even get a nasty encounter afterwards. For myself, my subjects usually appreciate that I take their photos. They are most of the time very happy.

3) I have posted almost 15 photos here. I don't know why you picked only one to comment on, with no mention of the others.

4) The right side of the baby's face plus part of his jacket is close to the tipping point of being blown out. This was shot on Sensia 100 E6 film. You can try exposing for another 1/3 of a stop but I assure you that another 1/2 of a stop would result in lost details on the baby's face.

5) Some of my viewers really like the dad's and the baby's expressions. They might look uninteresting to you but no single photo invokes the same feelings among all viewers. That's the primary reason why I am showing my entire work rather than just a selected few because different people have different opinions.

One more thing, I don't see my shots as individual pieces of work. I don't even use the word composition anymore. I tend to use the phrase visual language instead. What I am showing here is a general approach or visual language. The photos might feature different subjects but the technique and approach are largely the same.

This one was shot with a $400 fuji 6 by 4.5 medium format point and shoot.
The lens is a Fujinon made in japan lens.

as for contrast
Portra NC is known for flat/low contrast. I chose this film because it was a bright day but this shot happened to be taken inside a tent. Obviously it wasn't practical to change film/camera on the spot.

Not all photos need to be in a bell curve shape. In fact, photos with bell shape are *usually* boring.  If this photo is a bell shape, it will be very overexposed. That's why most photos taken with auto exposure look bad as the camera tries to protect highlights and everything into a bell shape.

This picture has a good exposure.  The baby and father is at the entery of store front, therefore closer to the light.  Your are an engineer, you must understand better the inverse square law than most of us here.  The light difference between the background and the subject makes the subjects pop more.   Cowboy made a decision to expo for the baby, and let the background darker to draw viewers eye to the subject.

That's the reason photography lesson no. 1 is "White on White, Black on Black, White on Black and Black on White.

That's also why I don't care much for the matrix exposure or auto exposure on cameras,  it is hard to program aesthetics into cameras.

I have learned not to trust any meter or auto exposure on my cameras. A tiny ambient meter in your palm beats any on camera meter you can have. The only time I would use auto exposure is when I use a TTL flash.

I agree with your comments but the visual language or presentation is not in line with National Geographics. When I think of National Geographics, I think of intense vibrant colors and the photos are shot in an editorial way.

This photo, along with many of other chobit's photos, belong to the category of commercial photography which you often see in magazines like Travelers, Seattle Met, Business week, etc.

If it was a feature on Foxconn, the shot would probably be an overhead shot with probably thousands of workers below all performing the same task with front to back sharpness on a large format camera.  Basically, the editorial shots in National Geographics are the ones that you could see hanging in a gallery.

Again, I agree with all of your observations about this photo. But to say that it can be featured on the front page of National Geographics is just over the board.

I had been alittle too busy to post until now.

Regards to what I try to explain on previous post about exposure, I'll use the following example to clarify my point.

The box is the subject aim for getting the correct exposure.

Amoung the 3 picture.  We have Normal, Under and Before correction.

Normal is correction exposure with any photoshop adjustment to bright it up.
Before correction is under-expose, and need correction
Under is the Before correct photo being corrected.

With the under-expose exposure corrected to the same level as the properly exposed image.  You can see the dark underexplose area simply don't have the same details as the properly exposed photo.  And under-expose image that's being corrected tend to be very contrasty as well.  That's what I see in HappyCow.

So, what I see on HappyCow's photo is the background has very little shadow details, the highlight are very contrastly.  It's look like a underexpose image that's digitally corrected.  I would have expect the person's face would show a little more level of shades..

I know I am not doing a good job to explain this, but hope someone still understand what I am trying to say

Using the Original photo.  I lower the mid tone of the image, then rebalance the brightness just like how you normally need to do to correct an underexposed image.

You can see how the background no longer have as much details, and the face has much higher contrast in it as well.

I don't really follow what you said about digital processing because I don't do any of that, but the shot was captured on E6 which has only about 4 stops latitude and the rapid fall off and lack of shadow detail are characteristics of slide film. Similarly, slides also have much higher contrast than negative film, although Sensia is already one of the lowest contrast slides available.

作者: chobit    時間: 2012-4-4 01:55

I hear you.  I didn't know it was film when I first made the original comment on your photo.  Yet, I had my good share shooting films for years ages ago as well.

In the good old days, I learn to select the type of film to shoot the type of shooting I do.  Using slide with minimal latitude and high contrast for an image where the background is in shadow area, where your 2 main subject, the man and the baby also have a good level exposure diff.  it just wasn't a lighting condition suitable for the film you had at the time.  If this is in a wedding, it would have been a complete failure.  Some type of fill flash or reflector woud be needed, unless I can made my subject move to a lower contrast area.
Yet, I knw this is no wedding, and you as a photographer is the judge of what you want.

I think it just isn't my cup of tea.  Photography is an art, so I respect what you choose.  So, let me apologize.

The weather is getting warmer, and I am so looking forward to do tons of non work related photography.  So, let's us all have some fun this up coming summer =D

chobit 發表於 2012/4/4 01:55

That's right. If I were doing a specific shoot, I would choose the film that suits the lighting and the weather the most. But when you travel, it's not possible to pick a single film that would look best in all situations across multiple days. I happen to like the way slides look during daylight with deep shadows, but I understand not everyone has the same feeling towards it.

A recent trend in street photography is to capture scenes that have extremely high contrast. I am not a huge fan of that but it's something to be aware of.

I think by failure he meant that it's not the typical look that your client might be looking for.  Deep shadow / high contrast look is an acquired taste, so to speak. Not everyone has the same preference. For paid assignments, all it matters is what your client wants.

Ya, digital is definitely 乾淨, which I hate a lot. So if you then introduce grain and noise in post processing, it becomes artificial.

Maybe my b&w digital processing skill really sucks, but I haven't see many low contrast digital b&w that doesn't suck. Digital b&w looks good with high contrast treatments though.

Agreed that BW digital is weaker in low contrast,  probably due to the lack of d-range.
