It's amazing how much photography has gone downhill since photoshop and DSLRs

My friend just told me one of her friends hired this guy to do engagement shots

http://www.alexshiu.com/blog/

I guess nowadays you just need to hire a monkey to take the shots and you work on the post-processing at home.

Client will think you are unprofessional if you don't use DSLRs and PS. Hahaha

I don't think clients know anything. You just need to somehow convince them that you are very good, best in the industry.

Some of the photos are heavily processed, but there are some great pictures there.  Wanna to share more of what you like or you don't?

Granted, not every single one is bad. This one is decent

However, most are so heavily processed to the border of comic illustrations. For me, an engagement shoot is all about the mood and the emotions between the two subjects. But by using such a heavy processing technique, everything else is completely buried under and all your eyes can see are plastic skins and ridiculously surreal graphics.

Even my friend who forwarded me these photos said she could feel a shiver when she saw these.

So the question is, why are the two people in this shoot so dumb to pay for this kind of stuff? I guess that's the state the world is in?

Actually I'm glad that there are different photography styles on the market for different clients to choose from. But I am surprised that why your friend decided to pick this studio and turned out they don't like the outcome?!

no it was my friend's friend who hired them
and her friend is VERY happy about the outcome

Just that both my friend and I are completely turned off by the images. I would be so ashamed to show these to my friends if I were the one being photographed.
作者: 快樂牛郎    時間: 2012-4-17 18:10

The biggest problem to me, is that, true photography is timeless and classic. People nowdays are still admiring Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Kertesz, Richard Avedon and you name it. But this kind of tacky stuff, even if it looks good to some people today, might look completely disgusting in 10 or 15 years when people's tastes change. So you do one of these engagement shoots and maybe 15 years later you will be so ashamed of it. Well, maybe you will just find it amusing and wonder what you were thinking.

I think I get your point here.  Your friend should have do the picking what she wanted herself.

I think they dp lag a emotion piece, but capture the environment/surrounding along with the couple fine.  So, like someone else says here, its the matter of style.

And honestly that's very typical Asian style.

Another thing I realized after shooting Weddings for number of years is to not over spend your money on pre wedding pictures.  Spend the money on the wedding day pictures where the real emotion moments are.

I actually think completely the opposite way. I would spend all on a pre-wedding shoot, because that's when you have complete freedom for poses, backgrounds and any artistic creativity. On the wedding day, you might as well shoot HD video and if you need stills, just take screen shots.

The problem is that they probably don't know what they wanted. A lot of this is based on marketing and peer influence. If 9 of your friends tell you that shxt smells good, you will find that shxt smells good.

But even people who hate the photos, they wouldn't speak out because they wouldn't want to irritate the person in the photo. Haha, so the cycle just repeats. These days not many people dare to speak out the truth. If your photo looks like shxt, I will just say how pretty you look.

Ah I see.
Well honestly, engagement photos, pre-wedding photos and wedding photos should be treasured (or mainly treasured) by the couples themselves but not their friends and families. As long as the couples are happy, it's just not necessary (and actually can't) to please everyone they know. Maybe one day you pick your photographer to shoot for your wedding and turn out your friends feel the same as you feel today.
作者: chobit    時間: 2012-4-17 22:31

Let me try my best to explain.  Engagement photos are important, but spendinmg couple thoudsands on it, then left with no money to hire a photography during the wedding is a wrong move.
I know very few people who would look back into their beautiful pre-wedding photos years after.  However, I've heard from previous clients where they were so appreciate of the photos they received because they have the time and moments with their relatives and friends.
One of my client grand-mother passed away few months after their wedding, and another who have photos of thei relatively where they gather together for the first time since many years ago.  Those are true moment, and feeling where you can remember years after years when you go back to the pictures.
During your wedding, you have moment your true friends and family are expressing their true emotions, things they don't do and say in the past.  The good and bad moments.  That's what wedding days is about.
I have to admit that chinese wedding is quite diff. than western, where Chinese are mostly shy, and care about how they look (Like a show), vs the opposite.
I also believe I have better understanding of this after I am married, and getting older.  Something one my not understand until then..!

Yeah I do agree wedding day picture is also important. Although I didn't spend that much on wedding day pic, I still feel lucky I found a nice photographer. Looking back, I probably shouldn't get that large pre wedding album it's so heavy to take out to just look at the pic. But yeah, wedding day pic are "memory"...where as pre-wedding is like.. once a life time look/feel like a "star"...if u know what I mean.

I am sure you can say that Whole Foods is BETTER than Wal-mart. It's just that some people rather go to Wal-mart because of cost.

Put it this way, if you had all the money, would you go to Walmart instead of Whole foods?

Wedding Day photography can be artistic too. You don't pose people or anything, but you make art out of the circumstance. Better yet, you make art out of emotions.
http://www.agwpja.com/

So yes, I agree. Pre-wed photos is almost worthless. Honestly one can take so called 'pre-wed' photos any day, spend a lil effort, pay up, and there you have it. Wedding day photos is once in a life-time. Definitely worth it to spend more $ to make sure memories are well captured and preserved.

Depends la, for example, couples may want to have their wedding portraits done in Europe but their wedding is being held in Vancouver, then they might want to have a portrait session done other than their actual wedding day, thus a pre-wedding or post-wedding might be needed. Besides, if the wedding day schedule is kinda tight and there won't be much time to do any portrait shots, then the couples might also want to have their portraits done in another day. Also, couples who want to share their wedding portraits with their families and friends on their wedding day, then they have to do a portrait session prior to the wedding day. Those are some of the very common reasons why pre-wedding and post-wedding photography exist. But I do agree that couples shouldn't spend all the money on pre-wedding/post-wedding but then they have no or very minimal budget on their actual wedding day.

Yea, every single shot could be an art (but also could be a shxt :b). Even the creator (the photographer) may intend to do an artistic shot and yes of course he/she is satisfied, maybe some people think they created art but also some people don't think so.
