Canadian can apply for work visa at the boarder under NAFTA. Going to look for a job shouldn't get you into any trouble.
You can tell them you travelling with one way ticket, as you are waiting for cheap ticket coming back ;-)作者: B2L2 時間: 2012-6-28 10:50
Getting the TN Visa need a job offer and satisfy other requirements. So if you're entering the US to look for a job, you aren't good for the TN Visa.
Like slamdunk6 said, you better prepare for questions from custom. Generally, Canadian allowed to stay in the U.S. for up to six months without a visa. The custom will see whether you have enough money to support yourself, and more important that you intend to return to Canada within that six month limitation. If he see you have any intention to stay in the U.S. permanently (illegally), you may not able to get onto the plane and your name may go to their list as well.

They may ask you if you are married, if you have properties in Canada, proof of utility bills, your paycheck, bank statements etc. All these are needed to show that you will come back to Canada.
OP didn't mention why he wants to travel with a one-way ticket. So any response is waste of time.
thanks a lot for good response and suggestion. 我打算先坐飛機去LA, 然後租車去玩, 很有可能去san fransico和las vegas. because my time is fluxible, i probably flight back to vancouver from either san fransico or las vegas. nevertheless, i've never intended to work in the states.
Make up a travel plan (you could still change it whatever way you want later) and prepare for questions. "Plan" for a return day and don't mention to them that you're flexible.
