The first set was taken on Trinity Street in Vancouver on Christmas Eve. Couple blocks were decorated with lighting.

It just keep misty these days. It takes a while to wait the rain to cease before you can take the shots.
作者: 嘉嘉    時間: 2012-12-27 11:21

I googled some of the pictures of trinity street
but doesn't look very appealing lor.....

most of the ones in north van look very beautiful, but just so far +_+

yeah it's raining everyday. It just happened that christmas eve night wasn't raining so I decided to go take a few pictures

Nice shots, Miss Gaga...

I used to forget bringing the plate in the old day. Therefore I have couple plates in stock - one attached to my 300mm, one on my camera and one in the car.

BTW, which lens do you use for those shots?
作者: 嘉嘉    時間: 2012-12-27 11:42

hahah thanks....but I like yours more!!!
I think mine the color is a bit warm and some light a bit over-ed. Yours is just right for everything

I used the 24-70 (of cuz the old one, not mkii, hahha, no $$$)

I'm using my babe Zeiss 21mm f2.8 setting at f11 with 30 sec exposure for most of the shots...

I shoot mostly primes these days...
I've only used my 24-105mm F4L once during the past year...
作者: 嘉嘉    時間: 2012-12-27 11:49

haha, no match with the zeiss prime for me

but I blame myself for forgetting the tripod plate too! =w=

I hate Canon for their wide angle lineup... The QA varies quite a bit between copies of the same model.  I've experienced a big fight struggling to pursue myself switching to manual prime as well. Once you look at the quality of the photos, auto focus is not a big issue for wide angle lens.
作者: AAC    時間: 2012-12-27 12:27

I like all these picture.
I will be wonderful if the house owners will consider a theme to decorate their lighting next year. It seems many of them added everything that create light in their front yards, just like yard sale....I took these for my neighbor over the weekend.  I like their simple setup.

Thanks for sharing AAC.

I feel quite amazed this year as it seems more people are willing to decorate for Christmas. Maybe, we should thank to the invention of LEDs which consume way less energy than the traditional light bulbs...

lo-pak, your combo doesn't make sense.
I would love to have a 1D series camera for the auto-focus.  If you are using manual lens, you can't use the power of 1D the auto focus.

Yes, and no.

It depends on what type of photography you are shooting...

It doesn't make sense ONLY when you are not in the field...

Previously I've got a 16-35mm F2.8 II in my bag. I don't even use it for quite a while because the quality is pissing people off (providing that price tag). You don't rely so much on auto focus for wide angle shots on landscape.

Most of the time I'm shooting wild life (birds and animals). I won't use a 5D2 for that purpose...

1D3 is not bad for shooting landscape in comparison to utilizing a 5D2 to shoot moving targets (especially when you are in the wilderness...). That's why I say 1 cam for all...

If I've got enough funding I would love to upgrade my gear to a 1Ds3 if possible.

But Hey, does that worth too much for an amateur?

hahahaha you found that place on burnlake drive too!

but just wondering, for manual focusing
how can you tell the object is really in sharp focus when the view finder that you look through is so small?

In daytime, I use the confirmation dot inside the viewfinder (Zeiss ZE lens has the focus confirmation function). If lighting is sufficient, once you've set F>6.3 or even 11, you don't even need to focus (like the old 35mm point-and-shoot camera);

At night, when I want the focus to be in the order of an hair accuracy, I will use the live viewer. Blow it up to 10x magnification, fine tune the focus dial, hold your breath, and take the shot...

Or, for portrait photography which large aperture is more favorable, I have to pre-set the lens to a certain focus distance e.g. 1m. Every time when I take the shot, I have to "remember" my POI is 1m in front of my lens. It takes more time for one to get used to "scene setting", i.e. "think" before you shoot.

Auto focus is not that critical for wide angle range < 35mm. Rather - contrast, color rendition, sharpness are way more important. Before I decide to purchase this lens, I've tried the 24mm f1.4 II as well. To me, I feel the Zeiss lens produces sharper, cleaner, "richer" and "sweeter" photos.

One legal question.  In general, can I take houses or lighting decoration picture picture from the street without the consent of the house owners ?   Or it is just kind of street photography ?

There's nothing wrong, it depends on usage. Everyone gets different needs.
At this moment, my lens lineup is:

1) Zeiss ZE 21mm f2.8
2) Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM
3) Canon EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM
4) Canon EF 300mm f4L IS USM

I'm proposing to get a EF 135mm f2L USM as well. The 21mm is my ONLY manual lens...
The mark II series for both 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 IS are $$$ these days, will have to wait...

"Legally" if it's not for commercial use or other personal offense, you don't need the consent other than showing respect to the owner providing you are "not" within the property (outside the property line) to take the shots.

It's not like portrait photography which the model has the copyright to protect his/her image...

I don't know what exactly you are looking after for micro-contrast effect...

Zeiss lens usually produce better 3D "feel" than Canon counterparts...
