METRO VANCOUVER - Burnaby Mounties executing a search warrant for drugs were shocked Monday evening when they entered an empty condo unit on the 11th floor of a 39-storey building and found large amounts of cocaine, guns and money, as well as 10 sticks of dynamite and several small bombs.
The dynamite sticks were crystallized and deemed a risk to explode, so officers evacuated the highrise apartment complex in the 4200 block of Grange Street around 8 p.m. as the RCMP’s regional explosive disposal team dealt with the dynamite.
“We were conducting a search warrant for drugs; we entered the residence — there was no one home,” said Burnaby RCMP Sgt. Wayne Baier.
A two-person explosives demolition team disposed of the dynamite, Baier said. It was taken to nearby Central Park where it was safely burned.
After the dynamite was removed, however, the team found a stash of small bombs.
"The IEDs were essentially small, homemade bombs,'' RCMP Insp. Tim Shields told radio station CKNW. "I don't know exactly how many there were, or how dangerous theoretically they were, they were fairly small in size, but there were numerous IEDs. They had to be removed by the explosives disposal unit,'' he said.
Shields said that the unit appeared to be being used as a cocaine packaging and distribution centre.
Residents of the building were allowed back in to their suites around 11:30 p.m.
