if your flooding (sewer) didn't get as far as messing up (clogging) the burner assembly (assuming it's a gas firing heater), all you need to do is turn off the gas, and start it by 1st manually start the pilot light (press the button while lighting the pilot)...keep pressing on the pilot for at least 30 secs or more, then release the button (button still pointing to light or pilot mark)...if the pilot stays on after you release it, then you can rotate the knob to on and it will light the entire burner assembly.
If your burner assembly is dirty due to sewer issues, make sure you mention that to your insurance adjuster. Depending on situation: you might ended up getting a new replacement water heater.

My relative has the same problem during the heavy rain storm last week. I hope you the best with the insurance.
First thing I will check is your insurance policy. Sewer back-up is not a standard part of a homeowner’s insurance policy as far as I know.作者: lo_pak 時間: 2013-9-4 08:33

Something doesn't sound right if you have leave debris in the sewage backup. Are you living in an old building 30+ years in Vancouver or New Westminster?
Do you know if you are having a gravity main or a basement pump for your basement sanitary service? You should better hire a plumber to take a look.
