Hey,Let's have some coffee talk.

Just wondering where people got their beans?
How do you like your coffee?
How far along is you latte art?

I used to get my coffee beans at JJ Beans, now I like to go to WE coffee or Republica.

Love his website! He actually called himself coffee Nazi. I though it's a nickname that others call behind his back.

I've only got coffee from him once. So I have no comment on the quality.

Well, mentioning Starbxxxx (esp comparing with their beans) at any independent coffee house is just asking for trouble. LOL

I like the following so far:
Milano (W 8th location)
Elysian (both)
JJ (commercial dr makes better espresso)
Kafka’s
Matchstick was too acidic for me but I heard they may have improved since.
I like Revolver for my single visit so far but they don't roast their coffee beans.

We in some way are spoiled here. I went to Montreal and found that having in-house roasted coffee isn't a common thing there. (guessing it's east coast vs west coast) We saw a few "well rated" cafe using 49th Parallel beans.... @_@

We buy beans when we travel as "hand gift" for ourselves.

Just found this online Not a bad list.

If you get good beans, you use less. It may cost more, but ended up saving some money.

For Starbucks, the only thing I use is their Reserve bean. Even so, their single origin beans are getting very rare. They are actually decent if you are looking for a bold (typical SB) yet flavorful coffee. I am drinking the Maui Mukka, Sundried Sumatra and Ethopia Sadamo. The Maui Mukka is very very good. I use my siphon to make these.

For my daily stuff, I am still drinking some homegrown coffee beans from a friend in Malaysia/Indonesia. They don't have a brand yet (sell mostly local), and the flavor is light, and earthy for daily use. I also have a bag of Ipoh White Coffee bean, it's good with condense milk.

Finally.. for a good/cheap cup of coffee Trader Joe's Joe brand is a very decent. It very much taste like Tim Horton's with a mallow flavor.

Since I longer have a coffee maker, I use manual drip. My Bodum burr grinder works great with everything except expresso.

Anyone wants to talk about expresso?

This is the closest to latte art.

PK:  do you have green beans from your friend, and roast them yourself?  As a beginner, I actual love the good forth milk more.  Espresso shot is secondary.

I really don't know where the beans are from, he just say the family starts to selling them locally.

If you want food froth milk, you can get a milk frother or get a Mukka Express, it will be a good pot for beginners.

Not crazy about latte art.
As long as the milk it proper froth (no bubbles please... micro foam only)
One of the best latte we had recently from an Italian cafe in Montreal.

I enjoy coffee but not an expert.  Not more than 3 cups in regular office hours.
I love to chat with friends in warm and cozy coffee shops.  However, most of the coffee cakes and pastries offered in these shop are too sweet or less selection.  When I'm at home, I like to serve my black coffee with Chinese pastries like 蛋撻,椰撻,雞批,咖哩角.... etc.  Just wondering if local coffee shops (not 茶餐廳) will have Chinese pastries on top of main stream pastries provided to customers ?   Or, put it that way, coffee shop with Chinese and pastries offered will be accepted by general customers ?

I think those are Hong Kong style pastry. I don't know any coffee shop serving that.
Currently no local roaster that I know of serves Chinese/Hong Kong pastry.
There may be some that have Taiwanese style western pastry/dessert (Kerrisdale).
But I am not sure.
作者: AAC    時間: 2013-11-21 10:04

OK, if those Chinese pastry along with main stream banana bread, cheese cake, brownie are added to the coffee shop menu, will it be welcomed ?

I don't know. It's up to cafe owners to bring whatever kind of pastry in.

I quite like the beans from La Cuisson, very good quality and fresh, fair price too, they sell cat poo and blue mountain.

They also sell Ice Drip Coffee Machine, good for lazy people want great ice coffee...

Just found out London Drugs is clearing Peet's Coffee in whole beans for $10 a bag. The roasting date is 10/10/2013, so out of my surprise it's so cheap.

I will try them tomorrow and see how good it is for pour over and french press.

kind of mutual exclusive
hk style cafe rarely appeal to the to real coffee aficionados.
And a real coffee cafe may find carry HK/ chinese pastries lowering their standards.
your only answer maybe go to a food court buy your high test coffee for 1 shop and pastry from another. IE parker place we have pine house bakery and 1 or 2 place for coffee connoisseurs.
