A day after a two-vehicle crash claimed the life of a young Vancouver Island Mountie, the public has raised tens of thousands of dollars to help her family.

Const. Sarah Beckett, a 32-year-old mother of two young children, died Tuesday in an early-morning crash with a pickup truck in Langford.

A GoFundMepage has been set up, and as of Wednesday morning had already raised more than $34,000 to help her kids and husband.

On Tuesday, the RCMP said Beckett had been a member of the RCMP for 11 years.

The driver of the pickup has been released from custody without charges.

“The driver was assessed at hospital after arrest and then released early [Wednesday] morning, without charge at this point,” said B.C. RCMP Cpl. Janelle Shoihet. “Of course, the investigation is still very much active and ongoing, and we’re just working through all the details at this point.

“There are a number of tasks that have to be completed and we don’t want to put forward charges until we are ready to put forward a fulsome package to Crown, who would then review it and make the decision as to what charges would be applicable.”
