Those of you who don't like trees very much will appreciate HP's continuing efforts to deforest the planet by using the maximum cardboard possible when dispatching items to expectant customers. Here's a big box the company recently delivered to loyal Reg reader Simon Lucas, who's based in Tokyo:
The pen is, Simon explains, to give some idea of scale. Now, here's what the box contained:
Yup, that's a solitary DIMM. Simon notes: "I was thinking of returning a faulty hard disk too, but if this is indicative of the contents-to-packaging ratio, I don't think the doors to the office will be wide enough to accommodate the replacement parcel."
A fair point. It's also possible the überparcel containing the hard disk might be strapped to a pallet for good measure.
apple is good with packaging tho....
the new macbook box is only a little bit bigger then the macbook itself!!作者: shutterbug 時間: 2008-11-25 23:12

waste of resource!作者: pkphilip 時間: 2008-11-26 00:16
Sony and Apple ships with 2 boxes too. One brown box for shipping, and inside the brown box, you get the brand new in box notebook. What a waste of cardboard!
Can't really blame the shipper for using the wrong box... they just grab whatever is handy.

I don't think this is a consistent practice.
I agree with pkp.
They probably just ran out of smaller boxes.作者: pkphilip 時間: 2008-11-26 23:48
At least in here, when I receive parts from HP, RAM comes in a small flat box. HDD comes in larger cube box.
Apple on the other hand, use foams for everything. So NOT enviromental friendly.
Sony on the other hand, is using a carton box that can be folded on the inside to secure whatever it is inside. It's very enviromental friendly.
