I guess spreading knowledge and allowing public understanding and awareness is the first step in changing these situations. The OP's intention is probably wishing that our very own Canadian government will be more responsible to their citizen abroad. Public awareness can help pressure the gov't to exercise fairer treatment when it comes to extentuating circumstances in regards to visible minorities... It's more than worth 1 post IMO.

I didn't read .. but I guess Canadian passport is pretty good ..

Especially now .. when stu-pid american scare to let people know they are american ..

No matter going to US .. asia .. ( japan etc ) European .. I found when showing Canadian passport ... good service wor .. PLUS fast for tax claiming .. (compare with HK passport .. china ci or whatever TW use .. )

They see BNO and REAL british passport differently ...

When I go travel with my mom and brother .. I hold Canadian passport .. my mom holds BNO .. my brother hold Bristish Passport .. usually ... my mom will take the longest time going though custom ..

The only place .. Canadian passport is near useless .. is in CANADA!!! those Canadian custom .. will try to TAX everything from u .. and those airport staffs .. they wont give you any service .. as you are just "ANOTHER" Canadian ..

Thats why I love Vancouver so much, where white people argue with on you:

3. Kung Hei Fat Choi is not as good as San Tai Gin Hong, ...
And I hate to say that, many times they are right!

May be you should not read too much into the "emotion-less stare ..."?
May be he/she were just:
a. Thinking what a cute "chink" you are, or
b. At a lost trying to figuring out whether you are from China, Japan or Korea.
c. Still trying to comfort you about "the 1997 handover".
Please understand that in small towns, people are not as "cosmopolitan", and you ARE just like somebody from another planet!

I found the other way wor ...

We dont eat cats or dogs .. may be some small village in mainland do .. I dont know ..

China town? actually, as the ONLY chinese work in this company (my department at least)  I am the ONLY one not going to chinatown .. but all white people LOVE too .. ( and it is funny, when we have meal, they use chop stick, and I use FOLKS!!! )

There are more female chinese then male chinese in Van ..  and the other way around in Calgary .. but somehow, white guys love "not so pretty" chinese women ..  but as a honger, I love blonde so much!!!

I am not sure in Van .. but whilte people dont hate chinese ..  few white people I know .. they are even in love with martial stuff ...  keep asking me if I know Jacky Chan ..

But .. on the other hand ..  many chinese I know .. in their mind .. somehow .. are like this:

- " white people are dumb As_  they are dumb, we chinese are smarter "

-" white peopel drive nicer cars ..  just because they have luck ..  bluh bluh bluh .. "

-"white people are GHOST ..  we chinese are HUMAN .. their culture is weird "

-"white people are powerful as COW .. we chinese ..  use our brain .. not our body .. "

of course, I don't agree with them ..

Oh .. I am sure COMEON will have diff idea!!

not totally useless, of course it is much better if you have both Chinese & Canadian, you can go to most part of the world without visa

About eating cats dogs and rat ... I tend to agree with Catpiano more. I would guess that even in China, people are more concerned with cars, condos, jobs, investments ...?

Not the first time .. but many times .. co worker asked me where to buy CHA SIU ... even I said T & T ( I rather go T & T, more safer then China town .. as I dont want to see Bullet hole in my car .. or my chest ...

)

They still go CHINA TOWN!!!!

Worse then found rat in meat .... one old news is .. found SPERM in a dish ...

and the worst part is .. sperm from FIVE different men ....

Oops.. OT again .. lol

Anyway, I like Canadian passport .. at least, it looks quite nice!

They would be crazy happy! can go HK for training ..

Somehow .. my co worker go HK almost everyyear ...

This year ( just last week ) he leads 2X people with him ... and they all were having lots of fun in HK .... they love HK .. and if they get free trip ? haha ..

Well .. may be just the CIRCLE you are in ... sure different then mine ..

I remember 1X yr ago .. my friend in Van ( of course, he is honger ) he loved to beat up white guys ... one time, a white guys complaint about his friends and him were talking in chinese too loud in a public area .. then he ended up beating up that white guys with his friends .. ( again, all hongers .. of course .. ) I was .. WTF .. as we shouldn't speak chinese too loud in public anyway ..

My be more and more chinese haters in Van .. I dont know .. we should ask " COMEON! "

Just white guys here .. still always think hongers are "COOL!"

I'm sure what you saying was true.
May be it is true in the past in Canada?
Or true in small town?

I'm aware the older generation of what you called "white people" are like what you said.

But younger generation, they are educated enough to understand we are just all human.  They do not see me differently, just because I am a Chinese. I randomly talk to different race, they are aware of the strenght of China.

Some white guys/girls, unlike their last generation, they are working their axx up and try to get as much education as they can.  They are not "dumb" as how Chinese think they are.

I seriously don't feel the pressure of racism or discrimination among my co-workers. Ha, the only time I felt offended or "discriminated" was from my CHINESE co-worker.  I had to file a discrimination complaint to my HR manager in Canada regional office.  He said "How long have you been here?"
"xxxx, You need to improve your English." Keep in mind that, this Chinese dude is WELL KNOWN for his bad English in the North America offices.......

And I worked in mid size company, international company.  Or even now,  I  see different races everyday in  different building, yet I just feel like working in a multi-culture environment.  We have black, white, French, European,Indian, Chinese etc etc.  I don't see how they discriminated me wor.
We speak our own language on the phone publicly, nobody will say anything at all.

In fact, the hallway of Finance department (I call it the manager hallway) are all Chinese or has a Chinese last name.

The only time I might felt offended came from my Philippine co-worker that she laughed at my CBC co-worker that he has Chinese accent and he dress like Chinese...

i also work in mid-size office (~600 ppl) of a fortune 500 company. coworkers are from all diff cultures. (caucasian, chinese, korean, philipian, east indian, french, south african, easten eurpean, middle eastern, richmond grown kids...etc) A lot of the upper management team are non-white (as you call it), from managers to directors to VP.

may be your work place is unfortunately different from mine and from Nam's.
