I just read that a jail guard in California brings home 300,000 a year.

A police commander can retire at 40 and receives 65,000 in pension every year.

i think it's unfair to judge the salary of police officers. they do have to face danger situations. they also had to go thro lots of trainings. you don't see as many cops foot patrolling on the streets like in hk. cos that's just not efficient in such large area.

well, part of their jobs also involve paper/computer work. that's why some times you see cop's cars parked on the side of a street and u thought for no real reason. and the cop was just typing up his/her reports.

btw you can't judge how important a person's job is just by how much they get paid.

Not street patrolling is one thing, but why are they drinking coffee at Tim Horton's wearing uniforms?

BTW, they work 4 days and get 4 days off.

Danger situation?  This isn't the USA.  You don't  ...

yes but they have long hours....
what i want to point out is normally, you only see cops when they are not working...and unless you are/related to a criminal or victim ...you won't be involved w/ their work. so you think criminology is a joke? investigation can be done by high school grads????

try to apply to be one yourself, i am sure you won't get in nor able to stand thro the training.

they work 11 (or 12) hour shifts buddy. even with 4 days work 4 days off, within 8 days, they still work about 44-48 hours.

if u have a regular job, you work 7.5-8 hrs a day, within 8 days, you work 6 days, so that means within 8 days u work about 45-48 days.

so if  you think they work short hours or "not-long" hours, think again.

I don't know. I agree to a certain degree that police here, in relative to HK, even compensated for cost of living, etc, that they are over-paid, underwork, faces relatively less risks and stress, but have very poor service quality/attitude/discipline, and for those yet faces very little consequences.

Police here faces no heavy arms (HK do, aka. Jewelry store robbery, bank robbery with automatic weapons). Police here have poor attitude and have a huge ego to carry, leading to tons of police beatings of innocents, which averages to a case a week if you listen to News 1130 everyday like me. The airport taser incident, which led to the death of an innocent tourist, was being brushed off with 0 consequences for the officers involved even though there were plenty of witness and testimonies pointing to the fact that what they did was totally uncalled for and unjust. Yet they didn't get any internal consequences, nor any legal penalties against them... Imagine somethign like this happnening in HK, the police would've been fired before any legal proceeding started.

Heck, I finished watching a movie from Silvercity Riverport Friday night. My gf was driving north on No.6 Rd and a police tailed us at a little distance. It then suddenly flashed it's light. We slowed down to begin to stop. Keep in mind that there's no shoulders on No.6 road where a car can stop without blocking the only 1 lane. The police then took the OPPOSITE lane going at what I'd say about 100km/hr? (We were going 50/60 and that thing just screamed by us). Then after the police passed he just turned the lights off... I don't know what the exact policy here is, but if he's trying to get to a scene, wouldn't he let the lights on continuous? It looks to me it's a case of needing that caffine/donut fix so badly that he abused the lights again. Furthermore, no matter how urgent the case is, driving 100km/hr in residential area, opposite lane and a place as narrow as No.6 is totally uncalled for. There are houses on both sides and ditches in between.... This contrasted with when I was driving on Lougheed highway the same night heading back into Coquitlam. An ambulence had it's lights on probably 2 km behind me. I was driving 70 and it took like 2/3 minutes to get close enough that I pulled over for it to pass. I think it was driving at max 80/90km/hr. And that is on Lougheed highway which people averages 100km/hr usually. With it's lights on constantly, I am sure it was actually trying to arrive to an emergency. Overpaid police driving 100 in a narrow 50km zone for probably getting donuts vs relatively underpaid medical staff driving 90 in a 70km zone for actually arriving at an emergency.... I maybe wrong about this, but it just feels that something is not right here...

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying every cop on our street is bad and abusive. I am saying that not only do we overpay them, but our system here does not facilitate a reaonsably paid and disciplined police force. The lack of check and balance in our system and the little consequences people in power faces when wrong doing is done is ridiculous. If anything, with power comes more responsiblity and if they do mess up they are supposed to face Greater, not less consequences if anything. It's just one facet of this otherwise wonderful city that is very badly managed IMO.

to Toppy, first, I have to tell you that there is nothing personal at all.

I don't understand you. You told us before that you came to Canada in the 90's and been here for a long time. You cannot to go back to Hong Kong because you are poor, and that's why you are still here in Canada. Am I right so far? If not, pls correct me. No hard-feelings. If, I say if, you can afford it, would you go back to Hong Kong?  Then if you really want to go back to Hong Kong, is there a way you can earn more and save enough your hard working money and go back?

In one of the topic you started, "回流 back to Hong Kong?" (sorry I had to copy and paste), at very last, you said, "Before we continue the discussion.  I need to know how long you have been in Canada, how long you have lived in Hong Kong, your age and your work experience.  It seems to me that you don't have much "Canadian Experience", if you know what I mean." (sorry copy and paste again).

Then why don't you tell us about yourself? Maybe we all will understand why you dislike "white" people, especially "white cops". It seems to me the message that you are giving us here.(to me, at least) "All white people are assholes."

For myself, I know there is "racism". But I disagree racism is as bad as what you've been telling us.

I just have to asy it again, no offends at all.

I am definately not a fan of Toppy, especially on his other posts concerning racial discriminations, etc.

Just being merely objective, tripixel is totally off topic in this case. This topic is dicussing Polices' compensation vs Nurses' compensation in Vancouver/BC. Whether Toppy is an a_hole does not changes the facts on the table which we can use to discuss. If one cannot be objective and stay on topic, I think there's even less ground for that person to attack another individual regardless of how lacking that other person is in terms of moral grounds.

By ricrick

By ricrick
toppy: 噢~好high啊,噢.. yeah.. come on baby.. oh.. ah.. eh...uh...  ya......

That's why i have the right to complain, whether these complaints affect policies is a whole other problem related to the effectiveness of our democratic process and how effective our gov't is making changes according to the voices of the people.

Well, if you complain, vented, and there's nothing you can really do to take out useless CEOs in private sector....that pretty much = useless. You vent too, you have your point, everyone had a good point & pretty much on same grounds too. But you haven't told us how your venting is not "settling down & sucking it up in silence". If you think a certain company's CEO is useless, which would imply that the company is badly governed impacting profit and bottom line, just don't invest in it. I think that's a very strong action. Or if you think the CEO is useless and wasting money, cutting into the bottom line of a company you already invested, pull ur investment. Otherwise, why do I really care whether another company have a useless CEO? I never talked about CEOs anyways, I am talking about the very government that is impacting your daily life, and that you've paid 10s of Ks, if not 100s of Ks every year to.

Venting, or in much more accurate and better terms, acknowledgement and spreading awareness, is not useless. Encouraging other to shut up about issues, by telling people that acknowledgement and spreading awareness is 'useless', is not only as simple as 'suffering in silence', but to promote the act of 'suffering in silence'.

There's no point to further discuss if you don't even agree that acknowledging issues and promoting awareness is a vital start in address any issues. I think this is especially vital when a lot of people don't even view this (Canadian authorities' compensation and efficiency) as an issue, as can be seen by a lot of LYKs that were defending the compensation level and effectiveness of the Canadian police force in this very post.

Our tax money is being spent very foolishly on our ineffective government, especially when compared to other places in the world, that there's still much room for improvement that we as tax-payer should demand. Moreover, there's still much room for improvement on how much we as tax-payer have been demanding in getting more efficiency on the return on our tax-money. I don't need half my bonus to go to buying tasers which are going to be used on innocent victims anymore, doesn't this alone justify the cause (of spreading awareness, etc)?

The problem is, CEO is a ridiculous example for issues concerning the government. I was pointing out that CEO and our government are totally diff stuff thus it was a totally irrelevant and stupid example. Those CEO have nth to do with me, why do I want to complain or try to invoke change? Besides, I think some of those CEOs are properly compensated anyways, especially when people paying their salary is perfectly happy, why should I say anything? If the board and investors are not happy they would've voted those CEOs out... On the flip side, the government have A LOT to do with me, I am paying them and a lot of people including me are not happy. That is night and day difference. If majority of the shareholder and the board think a CEO is overpaid and useless, it's trivial to kick him/her out. If majority of the citizen think a particular policy is bad, it's much more difficult to attack that particular policy through regular voting, etc. This is even more true because the general public is very easy to be moved/biased through political tactics. That is why exposing the deficiency is even more important.

In short: People paying CEOs are happy and people paying the Government are not happy. It's easy to kick out CEOs but hard to change the government, Applees and Oranges, get it?

You said just 'spreading awareness' is not useful. I think otherwise. Go back to page 2/3 and see how many people are still in their little dream thinking our police force is well trained, and fairly compensated (5 times+ pay of HK police which have to face AK) for invoking racism (beating by off duty police last week) and tasering innocent toursit.

My replies here were solely aiming at pepsis2's reply, where he gave a negative tone, putting down post which tries to spread awareness to people who were still defending our crappy police system/government. It is pepsis2 that was hinting that any voices trying to expose more aspects of our inefficient government as useless, hence my responses.

Besides, I think it's very apparent that pepsis2, and a lot of other people, including you, are not really criticising the content of this post, but merely criticising this post because it was posted by Toppy.

I dun give a damn about Toppy, but 見 Toppy D post 就反, perhaps 比 Toppy D post 更無聊 ...

CEO is a ridiculous example for concerning government...? As objective as you stated before, this post is actually about nurses vs police salary and whether or not it's worth their monetary value. And also, where can you find a happy tax payer? nobody's happy about paying anything unless it's going into their own pockets you know. & how can you summarize that people paying CEO's are happy? so, you can save your apples & oranges for your snack today.

one thing you still don't understand up to now is, i did not say "spreading awareness is useless" i said "spreading awareness but with limited or no solutions is still worthless and the only way is to continue to spread awareness".

tasering an innocent as i said in chinese (incase you did not read it well) is not to blame the integrity of police...it is the fault of an individual officer's judgement & conduct. so it is not justified to say that "you pay tax $ to get innocent people tasered & beatened". & of course, it's not fair to compare salary of RCMP to HK police because they are in 2 different countries & countries operate differently. Its just like saying we have better medical benefits compared to down in the States...am I not correct?

criticising this post because of Toppy? no. i don't think so. just like toppy, you probably don't understand that aside from many flaws (which is everywhere around the world), overall, alot of Canadians are satisfied with their standard of living here.

At least that was the reason they gave for raising police salary back in the 90's to pull wayyyy ahead of US salaries.

There's something I don't feel good w/ the police here. Those people back in my high school who wanted to be police officers were pretty trashy.
