if Chinese is the official language in Canada.
if Chinese was first to immigrate before the white people.
if Chinese had the army to conquer all over the world and colonize places.

i am trying to be right. and yet. every time i run into a white person who is take a stand against me. i know i am going to lose. i need to speak their language. they don't have to speak mine. it was written in history all over the place that English is better than Chinese. and the truth: I do not have enough knowledge of their culture to be one of them.

if Robert De Niro had to learn Chinese to get into a movie.
Not Jacky Chan and Chow Yun Fat speaking English with accents.

I am new. I am blowing lots of water. and I don't know how to type in Chinese.

sometimes I don't know what to do. Cantonese is my mother tongue. There is nothing I can do about it. When I am surprised I don't say GEEZ. I say WAH. I have tried to brainwash myself to fit into their culture. But I don't like Betty Boop or Winnie the Pooh. I like Ding Dong. And I know Ding Dong.

I don't play hockey. I play ping pong.

So how am I going to explain all these. That white people in Richmond has become a minority group. WELL. I don't see any Chinese culture going around Richmond RCMP. They don't eat dim sum and Chinese tea. Only I drink donut and coffee. There is a Chinese version of O Canada. more like a translation. somewhere on the web.

Being an immigrant has to admit I myself and family somehow believe our country / place of origin is not as good. All my memories / knowledge associated with my birth place and people has a negative denotation. if there is anything I can do about it, it will be:

Telling our local firefighters: GAU FALL
Telling our peace officers: ALL BEI YAN DA GIP / ALL OAK KAY YAU CHAK

Consider it is their duty to handle you, they will not leave you alone.
But then one of them is going to ask: do you speak English?
And if I ever had the guts to reply: I do speak English. Do you speak Chinese?

ps. making phony phone call aka prank can be an offense without a proper setting as an entertainment platform

what's wrong with us typing Chinese on a Chinese forum?
It's not like we don't have a life that we just "hide" on this forum and doing nothing.

I'm pretty sure most LYK will speak English to other race when they need to.

What's wrong with speaking our mother tongue.
I remember a white lady telling me that you should not be shame on  your ascent.
In fact, you should be proud of it because it shows where you come from.

As long as we respect others, and don't speak Chinese when there are other race around.  I think it's normal wor.

I don't understand why people feel so offended when people speak their own language in public.

I used to work for an Israel company.  The staff from Israel or consultant from India, they speak their language in front of me when they were in intense discussion about technical problem.   I didn't mind and I know it will be easier for them to discuss the issue with their fluent language.   Like why feel offended? Do you have something bad that people need to talk about you?

But of course, I will switch channel when there are other race around me..

Hum... I guess we need to truly understand the meaning and spirit of multiculturalism.

There's nothing wrong with speaking/typing English, or Chinese, or whatever language we like, as long as we treat each other with respect.

So are you saying, you hate English because you are born to speak Cantonese, and hate that you need to use English in Canada?

spirit of multiculturalism, I strongly agree with it.
I think it is okay to speak Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German in Canada. Why not?
Why do I need to go home if I don't like to speak English is a specific forum? It doesn't make any sense.

A couple of your points:
" When I am surprised I don't say GEEZ. I say WAH. I have tried to brainwash myself to fit into their culture. But I don't like Betty Boop or Winnie the Pooh. I like Ding Dong. And I know Ding Dong."
I don't see why you have to brainwash yourself to fit in the mainstream culture. You don't have to enjoy hockey game. You can still continue to like Ding Dong and buy Ding Dong comic here. There is nothing wrong that if you don't enjoy hockey. Like I still don't know the rules of hockey game and I don't follow the news etc. I see nothing wrong about that.

"I don't play hockey. I play ping pong."
There are a few ping pong clubs around and you can still play your ping pong any time. So there is no problem?

"So how am I going to explain all these. That white people in Richmond has become a minority group. WELL. I don't see any Chinese culture going around Richmond RCMP. They don't eat dim sum and Chinese tea. Only I drink donut and coffee. There is a Chinese version of O Canada. more like a translation. somewhere on the web."
Hm...it's interesting that why you would like to change others preference of food? Nothing wrong for me to like dimsum and at the same time nothign wrong for RCMP to like donuts. The most important thing is we respect each other's choice and we have a choice, we have tons of selection of restaurants  for dimsum

"Being an immigrant has to admit I myself and family somehow believe our country / place of origin is not as good. All my memories / knowledge associated with my birth place and people has a negative denotation. if there is anything I can do about it, it will be:"
I would like to ask why you would think that way? I came to live in Canada doesn't mean HK is really bad. It's my family's choice. I choose to stay here because I got a job, I enjoy the living environment here. Doesn't mean HK is bad wor. If I prefer orange to yellow, doesn't mean yellow is bad. It's a matter of choice, personal preference.

"Consider it is their duty to handle you, they will not leave you alone.
But then one of them is going to ask: do you speak English?
And if I ever had the guts to reply: I do speak English. Do you speak Chinese?"
Hm...I believe everything (or most) is driven by demand and supply. Now you see airport has lots of chinese sign, chinese announcement. Some government publication has Chinese translation too. If we have big enough community (like 90% ?) we may see more Chinese gov't service la right? Richmond has large number of Chinese population but it's just like more than half?

Agreed.  This is so much better than some people typing chinese, speaking chinese to each other--hiding in a hole in Canada.

Why are they in Canada if they only want to speak Chinese to each other?   ...

I use (read and write) whatever language benefit to me by the time I have to use.
Of course, I do not mine other ppl make their own best decision to use whatever language they can use.

In Singapore and Malaysia most young Chinese can (read and write) Chinese and English; understand by listening of Malay. Please tell me "where they should go ???????"

Knowing a language, is a "good living tool" of himself or herself and not a excuse kicked by "mind set"

Sometimes, Toppy.  I really get lost with your point.
You started post that Canada is a place of racism.
I assumed that you are a Chinese, then why you are discriminating us typing Chinese here.

And please don't use larger font because that does not make you better.
That's very rude.

Especially, I'm not offending you as well.
I'm just pointing out my POV in a very calm mood.

OK, white guy said so.  OK, there are discrimination within white guy.
Is it all white guys are like that? I highly doubt it. At least, fro my experience, not all Caucasian are like that. In fact, some of them are very interested in Chinese culture.  Back when I was in a small town, an elderly gentleman always ask my friend to burn him Chinese Pop music.  And try to learn how to speak Cantonese from her parents.

When I was working in a large logistic company in downtown, a Caucasian wrote something in e-mail by "mistake" to my Chinese co-worker.

Yellow Dog,

Is the cargo ready for pickup?

My Caucasian co-worker got so upset about this e-mail and her face was red.
She rushed into the CS Manager room and told him (He is an Indian) that he has to take immediate action about this e-mail. The whole office was very upset by this incident and our office was mixture of all sort of races.  European, HK, TW, Indian, Japanese, UK, French, Indonesia.  I'm not sure what sort of Caucasian you have been dealing with for the past years.  I'm fully aware there are racists out there but there are also Caucasian that respect different culture.  My General Manager who was also a Caucasian apologized to my Chinese co-worker and he should never tolerant such thing happen to his staff.

We google it, and she is lucky that there is actually a trucking company call Yellow Dog.

By saying that, I'm not denying there is no discrimination exist.
Come on, we, Chinese are somehow discriminating others by calling people "ar chai" or "gwai lo" too.

Just don't be so negative.

I have friends that are homegrown Canadian Chinese that who don't speak/read Chinese.

And if he/she is around, I will speak English so that he/she is not left out.

If there are people on LYK who is homegrown Canadian Chinese who don't speak/read Chinese, as soon as he/she mention that.  I'm pretty sure LYKs here wouldn't mind translate or change channel.

Sometimes, it is your manner or tone that people would respect you.

As long as you are easy going, respect others, I don't see why people have to target you just because you are a Chinese.

If discrimination is really that wide spread and ALL Caucasian are racist, why is the senior staff in my department always smile at me.  And tell others or tell me that I'm very bright and smart?  Why is she always ask me to join the life/wellness classes with her and make sure that we can go together on the same day? She could have just tell others that I'm not capable.  She could have hide my talents and promote the other Caucasian girl in my department.

As a Chinese-Canadian/Canadian-Chinese, I feel proud to be bilingual. (and actually it's a credit/benefit to live in a multi cultural country)
Of course, it's very reasonable and to show respect to people, to speak in English to Caucasian here in Vancouver. (provided that you are capable to speak English) But what's the problem for speaking Chinese among Chinese? (provided that both Chinese can speak Chinese)

I migrated to Vancouver not because of it is a English speaking country. I will speak English and Chinese according to different needs and purposes. I still watch Chinese movies and TVB episodes, that doesn't make me a non-Canadian-Chinese. Even I bleach my face to white. I'm still a Chinese but not real white Caucasian. I feel no shame to be a non-Caucasian living in a western country at all.

Why do I have to whine it in Chinese here?
It seems like you are the one who whining here wor....

I took my action and I don't think I'm brave.
I just know we have the same right as others as long as I hold my Canadian Passport.

I respect others and you can go ahead and believe what you see.
And I believe what I see.

If you want to have example, an example for you la gum.
a year ago, I went to Wendy's with my bf at night.
We stood there for couple minutes and nobody serve us.
Perhaps, we dress like we are a Chinese or honger teenager?
or the term "fob"?

As soon as someone finally help us, we asked them if we could change it to bake potato instead of fries. The asian girl was very shy and asked a more senior staff, which is  a Caucasian.  When the meal came, I asked the girl how come you gave me fries.  The b**tchy Caucasian yell at the little girl and said "then give them a potato".  I was not impress by the services that I received.  I went back to my seat and asked the janitor if they have a complaint form that I can fill up.

After I filled up my form, I brought the whole tray back to the counter and I told the Caucasian girl that I need to see her manager.  And that B*tch still thinks it's funny, and scream back in the kitchen " xxxx, we are in trouble!".    Then, the assitant manager asked me what's wrong with the food.  I told her that it's nothing wrong with the food, and I don' t need a refund.  I told her that I wrote down my complaint on the complaint form.  And the manager read my form loud in the public and try to make me embarrassed.

I just left the restaurant without wasting my time to argue with them.
Instead, as soon as we went back home.  We wrote a long formal complaint letter to their Western District Manager.   The next day, the District Manager replied right the way and asked if my bf can leave him the phone# so that he can apologized to my bf.

End up, the district manager made his formal apology to us and sent us 3 free coupon with his signatures on it.   We went back to the same Wendy for drive through and show our coupon to the cashier when the cashier asked for payment.
It is something that she never seen before and she asked that manager again.
As soon as the manager see that card, she wasn't even dare to look at us and quickly finish the transaction

Moral of the story? I'm not showing off how I fight back.  I'm just trying to tell you that, instead of whining or use your term "reporting" these incidents.  Why don't you step up and speak up for yourself?  "reporting" these incidents on internet will not help the situation.

Why do I have to go back HK or China if I'm proud of who I am.
Bare in mind that this country based on immigrant.

Even your so called "white people" are immigrant.  Only native people have the right to say "why don't you go back to your country or why are you here?"

I really don't understand your point.

Your point is you love Canada so much?
Or your point is you hate Canada so much?
I'm lost here...

Or your point is, if I agree with you 100%, then I'm allow to stay in Canada?

I'm in Canada because my parents made the decision for me.
I'm in Canada because I have a job and I spent 10+ years in Canada.
I'm in Canada because my family is here.
I'm in Canada because I don't whine about racism every second and I'm happy with my personal life.

Some people here and I are yellow, and we don't think we have problem living here in Vancouver. If you are a yellow or whatever, just because of you are not satisfied or not happy here, you can move out.
Even you move to Mainland China, Mandarin speaking Chinese could discriminate Cantonese speaking Chinese anyways. If you can't find the value of yourself, no matter anywhere in the world, you might not be happy. I won't suggest you to kill yourself all because of that, but it's your own business to think what you should do.

i totally agree with you.... He tells people to go back to hk or china when people challenge him. I totally feels like he wants to be president in Canada. Most of us didn't say we want to go back to hk or china, but he just kept telling people to go back. I don't see his points.

If someone really wants to go back, i think he should be the one telling himself to go back.

We are not hiding here. We have our lives. Plus we enjoy our lives in Canada..unlike somebody always whines, complains and swears. i have been working with Caucasian, Indian, Korean, Japanese and for a long time. I don't see any problems. We like each other and we learn from each other. This is called multiculturalism. We all are proud of who we are and where we come from.  No one need to be shame of themselves because they speak english or chinese.

Being able to speak more than one language is a gift that we all should be happy. Also, being able to practice reading, typing and speaking chinese  here is something that we all shouldn't  take it for granted.  On behalf of some LYK, i don't think anyone here would discriminate ppl that can't type chinese. The only problem they have is the way the message delivered to them and how it is presented.

Check my old threads.  You know, I never said I encountered racism myself.

\

er... and your point is...
You never encounter racism yourself but you are "educating" us that racism is everywhere in Canada......you never encounter one but you seen a lot because you came to Canada for years ...

and.........

You keep telling us to go back HK or China when most of us didn't say we want to move back to HK or China....

but......

I remember you started a post saying that you want to move back to HK but you have no money....

so conclusion....

I am still lost and don't know what message you want to deliver to  us.....
And your logic....

你又知佢哋唔知個社會發生啲咩?

Get to know the society...that you think they are blind and only see Chinese people in their eyes for some reason?

as far as I can recall, I don't remember they started to ask you to type Chinese.

You are the one who request other to type English here...

I don't know if you ever read some article on how people should be careful on typing out e-mail in work place.

I did.  And it said that using !!! or large font and bold font will create tension and that's give people feeling aggressive or yelling.

That's why as a professional, you should always proof-read your e-mail before you click the send button.

I am not filtering anything or saying anyone is right or wrong here. Please don't quote me. I am not trying to upset or offense anyone here.
Plus i am not blaming anyone. I just want to raise my concern that no one needs to be told to return to china or hk. No one should be telling anyone to return or go back to hk.

there is definitely nothing wrong with returning or going back to hk, but just don't need to say it every time. It is not very respectful though...

just my 2 cents, stay calm and ....k..anyway, i am just normally a CD ROM....  i don't mind to be ignored.

Howcome you people who feels discriminated don't see how Caucasians are welcoming minorities? Have you ever encountered Caucasians who try to speak limited Chinese to you when they see that you are Chinese? Have you ever encountered a Caucasian that said to you: "Ni Hao Ma?" or "Xie Xie" or recently "Gung Hei Fat Choi" to you? They might not know our language, but even if they only know 3 words max, they still try their best to say it whenever they get a chance. It shows that they recognize us, and appreciates our culture within our Canadian citizenship. Even if you haven't met those people, have you never met Caucasians who tell you about their wonderful trips into China, HK, & other parts of Asia? If not, then i think you are the one that haven't been dealing with enough white people.

Think of all the large events that the city has put on to recognize the Chinese minority: Moon Festival, CNY, etc. Chinese is probably the most recognized "minority culture" across Canada.

Adapting here doesn't mean you need to say "geez & eh". You can still say your "wah", I can still say my "wow". The thing that Toppy and some people have trouble adapting is the SPIRIT & LIFESTYLE. The barrier is only there if YOU put it there.

And about learning English... when I was in grade 1 newly immigrant, i spoke barely a word of English & of course required to take ESL. after only ONE YEAR, from being an ESL student, I was transfered to TUTOR other peers to read english. Why? I used to go to the library to borrow 20 kids' novels to read every week. Learning English hard? What about French for us Chinese? I took French from Grade 1 to 12 too. I went from a C- in grade 3, to an A in grade 4 and ever since it's either A or B. From the lack of practice, I can't speak as good now, but at least I can read general French. You don't need to be pro, as long as you know.

As for dealing with racist Caucasians. There are those out there. But with the promote of multiculturalisam, those too have adapted & gotten less. If you can't deal with it, it's your problem. When you face those Caucasians, have you ever told them in their face: "I don't care, I am Canadian & we all are. you should respect that". Have YOU? Well, maybe you should try next time, and see their sorry faces with nothing to say. Especially Toppy. You are the one that doesn't have the guts to "deal" with white people, speak up, & respect.
