打工.. you work every weekday, get a hopefully decent salary, but usually stable.  But, many of 打工仔 might hate 受氣.  東家唔打打西家... does that work in Vancouver?  Usually there's only 1 家...

自己做老板... you (potentially) earn much more, but on the flip side, the risk and stress are much higher.  Time for kids and family would reduce.  Everything's $$$ in the eyes.

What do you prefer?

all i can tell you is that IT jobs are not necessary stable.

受氣.... it happens to almost all jobs.  middle management is the worst position.

自己做老板... if you don't have a mortgage or you have someone backing you up ...

in the first couple of years you won't have any vacation.

prefer ... money to grow on trees ....

depends on which sector of IT...let's say software development.

developing the product is one issue, but what about selling them?  local? global?  for the company i'm working for...unless i have very good networking, else i can't see myself starting a business that sells similar product.

Another false statement.

Opening business is all about timing and opportunity.

Running good business is about location, management, and good marketing.

It is true every where.

You can make money in Canada too maybe not as easy as in Asia countries but your statement : In Canada, you lose money was false.

Again, all I am saying is that your statement

"In Canada, you lose money."

is wrong.  You speak as every business will lose money.

sorry, I did not make money from my business but at least I did not lose any money.

I found out all of your statements are very aggressive, and like to generalize ans assume things.

We do not make any more does not mean we loose money.  Yes my business lives on day-to-day paycheque and so what?  We are happy.  What give you the right to call me an idiot?

some people choose to open a food business in a Chinese mall because they want to target more Chinese clients with low cost to maintain.  Do you know how much it cost to run a food business in Metrotown?  That would 10 times the lease + maintenance fee.

Again you are generalized things that all people did not want to make more money just because they want to stay in Chinese Mall.

actually... Canada... 有乜好做?

Seems like a lot of companies here (big and small) actually serve US customers...

Canadians are not spending a lot of money on things and services.  Not that we are poor, (maybe we are), but we just don't seem to spend as much... agree?

What do you think?

US market is large and close by. So having US customer is more 理所當然.
IMO, Canadian is more friendly and nature-like, environmental aware, less care on trendy, materialistic, and stylish goods.

"Return of investment = time value of money + opportunity cost
(If you don't understand the terms, google them)

That means what?  Using the same lump-sum of money, instead of running a business in Canada, I run a business in Hong Kong.  How much more money would I make compared to Canada?"

what are you try to say?

Time value of money is the present value of the money that you are going to receive or pay in the future.  it usually use when you purchase fixed income instrument or borrow money

opportunity cost is the best rate of return available for a given level of risk.  usually use in calc. required rate of return

don't know how your formula work, but defiantly your formula has nothing to do with your statement.

Yes I do understand. Well, he said he didn't lose any money. I guess as a business owner, one or the accountant would have used all the possible way to avoid paying as much tax as possible. They are actually a bit different,

retail required you to buy inventory in and hopefully to sell them

food business required you to buy ingredient but however the cook combine the ingredients is up to the cook.  In my opinion, food business is easier than retails since every one has to eat.
作者: fibbi    時間: 2009-2-19 14:57

Different kind of business like Retail, Food, Service, all depends on 人流....the more people, more chances of selling. In addition, high tax , minimum wage etc...it's not a very favourable place to open business IMO.
Unless you can think of a business very unique that appeal to a market niche that people would spend the $ on it. Yeah it's easy to make a living, but not easy to make $$$$.
