If you quit a job, a verbal notice is good enough or should give both verbal and written notice to the currently employer.

i think a formal written notice would be needed for full time position.
if it's part time or casual job, may be verbal is alright.

depends on what kind of job u are doing... if u are a waiter, i think verbal is enough
