Hi LYKs, after years of consideration and parents' approval, I have finally decided to home a puppy in the family. Please chip in your precious advices in regards to this decision for I'll be a first time dog owner with no past experiences. Thanks!

No franchised pet stores from puppy mills... Hence, any recommended local Toy Poodle breeders?

Most importantly, I came across this local pet store called "Pets Wonderland" in Empire Mall, Richmond. They seem very decent and responsible. Anyone bought puppies from them in the past? Comments/concerns bout their reputations??

Again, many, many thanks!

My little boy was adopted (purchased) from Pet Wonderland. He is almost 6 months old now.
You can ask us questions here as I owned 3 dogs before... All my family members are dog lovers.

Thanks! and your maltese is sooooo cute!

Do you know where they get their puppies and such? Local breeders as they claim?
作者: ACooperFan    時間: 2009-3-9 21:07

just make sure you are aware of the responsibilities....all the walks, the pooing, the attention, training, love a dog would need...

but then i'm just blahing...i don't own a dog...
作者: sko    時間: 2009-3-9 21:12

Yes, tons of responsibilities and care for the coming decade or two, but I think it'll be all worth it.

Yes, puppies are from local breeders...
But you can always go check out puppies from

My little guy is attending obedience class, so far so good. He can sit, heel, on leash and stay now. Looking forward for more fun with him.

And while I was in the store, I was playing with this adorable maltese. She's around 5 plus months old and possibly a sibling of your puppy? I so wanted to take her home; she was so attachy and 'deh'. Always climbing up for hugs.

get a puppy from SPCA, don't buy a new puppy, help the dogs who need help.

It's free, animals are inspected.  They have a program that make sure you will be able to handle an animal (not buy one and regret because you cannot take the responsibility).

i got my dog from a breeder, it was a special order LOL  if you want the dog you want, you'll have to order it usually.  its much cheaper to buy from breeder then retail too.

but i havnt seen him for a few months
作者: sko    時間: 2009-3-9 21:35

I actually did look into SPCA few days ago, but their toy poodles were all fairly old, ranging from 7-12 only.. and their other dogs are usually huge, which my house cannot hold (neither can I handle).

For sure my Maltese is healthy and so pure white...

If you have set your eyes on miniature/toy poodles, then it's pretty hard to adopt one.
I google around and only found this poodle site so far. It on Vancouver Island and the up coming miniature litter are almost all taken. Their poodles seems to be happy and well taken care of.

One thing about getting puppies from breeders is that you can possibly see their parents and know what characters and look they will become.

This one is in Nelson, BC:

btw you want toy poodles not teacup, right?

usually pet shops like pet hxbitat, supxr bet etc got their dogs from puppy mills, I'm not surprised if pet woxderland got their pups from puppy mills too. Not 100% sure but I don't think pro breeders they sell their dogs to pet shops. I got mine directly from a breeder, sorry mine's not a poodle so I dun have any helpful info on that.

have you looked into petfinder.com?

If you like poodles, here is another choice.
Goldendoodles

This is a very popular breed.

but make sure you are ok to loss your freedom in the future wor.

Thank you all for the good info!

Yeah, I will for sure avoid those popular franchised pet stores due to the puppy mill concern. That's why I opened this thread in regards to Pets Wonderland (making sure they won't be like those usual pet stores where good breeders would never sell their good pups to).

I tried looking for local toy poodle breeders, but none were found... and I also tried all the previous listed websites in the past 2 weeks or so but they rarely have anything I want.

toy poodles are sooooo cute.

作者: sko    時間: 2009-3-9 22:11

And maltese would be my other choice; they're also duper adorable.

Tough decision.. lol
作者: sko    時間: 2009-3-9 22:13

吳孟達: How did you keep your maltese's face so white and clean? Are the tearing eyes a large concern? Can you maintain his face white and clean all the time?

maybe you info is more correct, I had my guess because when I bought my dog, the breeder needed us you sign a contract for no reselling the purchased dog, and the dog has to be neutered. Maybe different breeders have different policy?

And just curious, are home breeders = certified breeders or puppy mills? So many people they breed their own dogs and selling them on craigslist, do they also consider as breeders?
作者: 吳孟達    時間: 2009-3-9 22:31

I did a lot of researches on web and ended up with the followings:

1) Dog Food - we bought the one which is grain free
2) A facial scrub product supposed to clean his face every 2 days or daily
3) Boiled water - no tap water

Same concerns/inquiries over here. And since there are no well known local Toy Poodle breeders in town (not according to the internet anyway..), how can I tell if a particular so called 'breeder' is a good breeder? I mean.. basically anyone can be a 'breeder' on kijiji.ca/buysell.ca right?

Pets Wonderland promises 1 year of health warranty so that was kind of good?

Did you check on pet habxtat's policy too? Because I knew they have this kind of money back policy even they sell puppy mill dogs...

That's why I drove all they way to buy my dog from a certified breeder, I don't trust any of the home breeders at all even if they claimed themselves pro breeders, I don't want to take any risk

I understand adopting one from SPCA is the best idea, however if the dog size is sko's concern, I don't think she can take care of a big dog at all. It's good that sko already know how much effort she could make in a long run, rather than take one home from SPCA and then dump him/her once again when sko found that she cannot take care of a big dog afterwards.

Oh I was on those sites before too, but they're mostly miniature poodles which will be slightly larger than the toy ones.

Yeah, teacup ones are cute, but they're too fragile with more health problems. Toy sized poodles would be my top pick (not as big [difficult to handle in my town house], and not too small [they say first time dog owners should avoid teacup ones because they are inexperienced since teacup poodles would require extra care and caution]).

Oh, good to know cus I didn't check on the Pet Habxtat/etc's policies (can't seem to find them online either).

I was actually at Pet Habxtat today. They sell them for so much more as well. $2100 plus tax for the Toy Poodle compared to the usual $1600-1800!

most of the certified breeders are not in the city area. You may need to make some effort (a trip) to check out the puppies/mom/pap. Another way is to check to see if the vet (if you know any already) has a recommended breeder.

my frd got a toy poodle last year for like $1500 only.  and she gave it away after a few months cuz it was a boring dog and won't get along with her dog.
作者: 吳孟達    時間: 2009-3-10 09:25

Dog will never be boring as it is not a toy...
It is the problem of the owner....
If your friend is care, your dog should be a fun and smart one....SAD !!!

Example:

You have a son or daughter, and she or he don't talk and don't play, will you throw him out on the street? Please ask your friend to be responsible.

before you are going to buy a puppy, be prepared you will have no freedom.............
To housebreak your puppy, you need to spend a lot of time for the first few months.

And be very careful with your puppy as it is very danger in the outside world.

My friend had a toy poodle and was died last 2 weeks. He was attacked by a walk by dog when he is on his front yard. This is a total accident.....
The medical care cost around $12000 and as he is seriously injured, he past away and went to the rainbow bridge...sad sad story.............

So, be a responsible dog owner and your puppy will be a happy one.

作者: Ultraman    時間: 2009-3-16 15:37

It's like saying a new born baby (human) is ugly.
Many dog owners treat their dog(s) their human babies.
To them ("parents"), none of their "baby" is ugly. But only the person saying is ugly (at heart).
作者: 吳孟達    時間: 2009-3-16 19:03

The dog will be back on track after receiving new owner's love.
My Maltese is her younger brother and they should look very similar.

作者: katamari    時間: 2009-3-16 20:37

Why do you guys think the dog is ugly? It's ok la and most important of all is the health of the dog, not the outlook.

I've told my dog, even if he becomes a 3 leg dog I will still love him, outlook does not matter to me at all.
作者: 嘉嘉    時間: 2009-3-16 20:55

As a dog owner, I also have some breeds of dog that i don't like (in terms of appearance)

but this is something that I always say:
Even if I don't like this dog, there must be someone else who loves him/her. There should be  no need to insult anyone or any dog.

No worries i still love her dearly ^^

Appearantly the pet store didn't groom her well enough in the past month or two and her eyes are kinda shaped in a way that her tears would run down very easily (hence the excessive tear stains and stuff). She got a lot better now tho! I wash her face with Diamond's Eyes all the time and am thinking of giving her Angel's Eye or Missing Link supplement to elminate the tear stains. When her new far grows back out, she'll be all pretty again (the pet store just shaved her stained hair off the face instead of washing them @@).

She just got all her shots done for the year and in a week or two, I'll be taking her to the vet again for her ovariohysterectomy operation as well as a surgical flush to open her tear ducts. By then, her face probably won't be as red and teary and hopefully the new hair will grow back too!

Here's a pic of my baby's old picture with longer facial hair and minimal tear stains:
