Hair cuts, dry cleaning, clothes
These cannot be claimed specifically, but there is a general tax credit available to any one with a T-4. It provides about $150 savings each year to cover expenses such as dry cleaning and hair cuts. Filers do not need to itemize or list their expenses on their returns, but are instead eligible for the deduction if they file for it. - ctv.ca
anyone has any further information? which line should we report the $150?
I think it talks about the non-refundable employment credit which is around $1000. It is only eligible to people who have T4.
Under Canadian income tax act, personal expense is not deductible.
Kingsway is referring Canada employment amount I believe which if you report income on line 101 or line 104, you are entitle to claim it.
Line 363 - Canada employment amount
Claim the lesser of:
$1,019; and
the total of the employment income you reported on line 101 and line 104 of your return.
i know personal expense is not deductible, but since mingpao & ctv also mentioned they can be claimed under general tax credit, i thought there is something i miss.
I was searching on Mingpao, but without success. Can you provide the link or the full story from Mingpao or CTV?
as a cra employee, i can tell you there is no such thing in personal income tax, at least not that i am aware of.
I think I saw that news before. They are only talking about special cases like you can claim dog food because you run a farm and that dog is a guide dog....etc
So I think the expanses for hair cut is for similar speical case.

have no fxxking idea wtf the haircut thing is referring to, MAYBE employment amount. while for the rest, it may sound unusual to many people but yes, they are possible.
(This could be farming income/loss which related to the business. As a business, there is a lot of deduction. Sorry, not too familiar with farming as I am not a farmer.)
(I think this is talking about child care expense)

(Really have no idea what they are talking about on this one. It could employement credit which I posted above)

seems like noone really knows about this. i asked few accountants, but they have no idea at all. definitely not employment credit la.
I emailed ctv, hope they will give me some details.
client service division.
they only reasons i relate employment credit with the dry cleaning thing are
1. they say it is for people with T4 (employment)
2. the amount is about $150, which is the actual credit amount for employment credit.
that's right, let see what will they say.
how many divisions in call center does cra has this year ar? seems like an agent only repose in one area. an agent used to be responsible for all areas ma.

Well, I don't think an agent is responsible for everything.
Even accountants sometimes can't answer some of your tax questions.
It is probably just happend that your questions can be answered by that particular agent.
But isn't it better? one agent is specialized in an area which your questions are more likely to be answered correctly?

we joked about strippers whom had breast argument that it should be a capital asset as it provides long term economic benefit.
(This is bad debt or ABIL depending on the situation. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/t4037/t4037-e.html) bad debt and ABIL are 2 different things作者: tofu 時間: 2009-4-3 22:47
"""But isn't it better? one agent is specialized in an area which your questions are more likely to be answered correctly?"""
yes, more confident, but long wait. i need to wait 3x more ma. and two of my questions needed to refer to someone in the east, wait another day ar.
but i think actually it is good, at least they removed the recording, something like " the agent is not responsible for the accuracy of the answer", i remember they have it for few years.
Ok. So I read the CTV article again.
It says:
Bad debt
An "Allowable Business Investment Loss" deduction may be granted if a small business corporation owes the tax filer a "bad debt." This can also be applied in cases where an individual owns a share of a small business corporation that has gone bankrupt or insolvent.
So I guess the reporter in Mingpao just translated to Chinese (or the other way round?)
I think the reporter is a little confused with bad debts and abil.

specializing is more productive, i learnt that in economics =)
cra has sh!t loads of different departments, the ones that are open to the public includes, GE, GSTC, CCTB, APPEALS, COLLECTIONS, ENFORCEMENTS, EFILE, TELEFILE, NETFILE.....ETC.
and many more internal ones which i shouldn't say much here :p作者: tofu 時間: 2009-4-3 23:12
my mum came up with a funny question, if we are able to claim 整形, my dog make my 心理和身體健康, can we claim the 狗糧.
I guess you can argue that as long as you can proof to CRA how the dog can make you healthy mentally/physically.
The question now is how are you going to justify that? Get a psychology doctor's prescription to get dog food in order to make you happy? hehe作者: gianttama 時間: 2009-4-3 23:31

your question is, can you? yes you can, you can do claim anything u like, but prepare to get audited and get a big tax bill in your mail, lol.
if u r blind, u need a guide dog, then i think u can claim the dog food, not too sure on this, but MAYBE yes, too lazy to check.
Tax lawyers would get no businesses if all people all strictly follow to the tax rules. If you are rich enough and want to spend some, why not go claim more tax credits if you want to.
Okay.
I was really bored.
But here is one condition that you can claim your dog.
Animals - the cost of a specially trained animal for use by a person who is blind, profoundly deaf, or has a severe and prolonged physical impairment that markedly restricts the use of their arms or legs. In addition to the cost of the animal, the care and maintenance (including food and veterinarian care) are eligible expenses. Reasonable travel expenses incurred for the patient to attend a school, institution or other place that trains him or her in the handling of such an animal (including reasonable board and lodging for full-time attendance at the school), are eligible expenses. The animal must be provided by a person or organization whose purpose is training such animals.
For 2008 and later years, the eligibility to claim the cost of specially trained animals and their related expenses, has been extended to persons who are severely affected by autism or epilepsy.
The cost of a haircut is not deductible against employment income even when you are a serviceman and you are required to get one every two weeks. (Rouillard v. The Queen [2000] 4 C.T.C. 2065)
