What are the benefits of an EDL?
* A convenient wallet-sized card that's your licence to drive and proof of your identity and citizenship.
* The latest security features to prevent fraud and identity theft.
* A less expensive alternative to a passport for business or pleasure travel to the U.S. by land or water.

To be eligible for an EDL you must:

    * be a Canadian citizen and a B.C. resident
    * provide the required identification to prove your identity and citizenship
    * be legally entitled to travel outside of Canada (refer to the entitlement-to-travel questionnaire)
    * be 16 years of age or older, and
    * if you are under 19 years of age, bring a parent or legal guardian to your appointment.

Required identification

To apply for an EDL, you must provide three pieces of acceptable identification to verify your identity and citizenship:

    * a Canadian birth certificate or Canadian citizenship document
    * a Canadian or U.S. driver's licence, and
    * one piece of additional identification.

Note: All identification documents must be originals. Copies will not be accepted. Refer to Your Guide to B.C.'s Enhanced Driver's Licence Program (see pages 3-8) to learn more about acceptable identification.
What are the requirements?

Before you book an appointment, make sure you understand the requirements and restrictions. Refer to Your Guide to B.C.'s Enhanced Driver's Licence Program (see pages 3-9) to learn more about all the requirements and restrictions.
How do I apply?

To apply—or reapply—for an EDL, follow these steps to complete the process.
Step         Description
Step 1         Read Your Guide to B.C.'s Enhanced Driver's Licence Program and make sure you meet all the requirements.
Step 2         Book an appointment to apply for an EDL at an EDL designated driver licensing centre.
Step 3         Complete the EDL checklist to prepare for your appointment.
Step 4         Attend your appointment and complete your application.
What to bring?

When you attend your appointment to apply for your EDL, you'll need to bring:

    * your completed citizenship questionnaire, and
    * the originals of all required identification.

How much does it cost?

I applied Nexus because I visit to US every 7-9 days or so. I was upgraded to the RFID card a few months back and I love it!

Really big thumbs up to the US/Canada. I have Nexus and I find it very good that now I can cross the boarder  through any lane, not just Nexus only. I no longer need to carry my passport when I have pessengers in the car. It works on Sea/Air/Land travel. Now the benefits can be given to everyone.

The EDL is a lower version of the Nexus because the interview is happening with ICBC. Nexus needs to interview by both US and Canada customs. Also, EDL is good if your passport is expiring, you no longer need to renew your passport if you have EDL. However, with EDL, you still need to verbally declare goods coming back to Canada. With Nexus, I just use the Traveller Declaration Card.

For those who plan to get EDL, make sure you point the card side with your picture towards the reader for 5 sec before you move. Otherwise the custom will need to scan it again.

It is quite interesting that US has these huge readers for RFID cards, so the custom don't need to take the card. In Canada, they don't have the scanner yet, so the custom has to take the card and manually feed into another scanner...

The ICBC website says you MUST be a canadian citizen to apply and you must proof your citizenship by showing them your citizenship card or documentations.

I used my passport last time and the US border guard just swipped it and let us go. all done in 30 seconds. The guard said the swipping saved him time. So what is the big fuss and why pay the $35?

the new dl will have the same future, so you can swipe and go.  i think the benefit is if you want to go to the state, you don't need  to pick up your passport at home first la.  also if your passport is expired, you don't need to renew your passport for entering us

US has a touch-less system through RFID, unfortunately Canada still have to swipe... I just went through custom today, they say if you have EDL, you still need to line up like everyone else. I might as well take the Nexus.
