seems like everyone knows already.. but i'm driving TSX '05 AT.

4 yrs warranty will be gone soon, so I'm thinking maybe I can try fiddling around.. keke...

What are your comments on...

things I considers
- price
- better power
- keep about the same noise
- not super bad effect on durability.

Didn't have time to go thru all the stuff said in the reflash.  Does it change vtec kick in?

Flashing ECU gains a lot BUT it will definitely cause more wear and tear on your engine/tranny/drivelines.  If that's OK with you, then go ahead; it's the best method for power.  Otherwise, just do intake and exhaust will gain you a few extra hp.

Lighter wheels will help if you go track day but for "street fun", some difference but not huge.

intake and exhaust... will they make my car noisier?

what will I gain?

If I need to upgrade my brake, what kind of pads are good?
作者: Lik    時間: 2009-4-24 23:10

Best thing to do is to go sign up at a good North America-based 1st gen TSX forum, and see what other people are doing. Read a lot of old posts, find out what works, what doesn't, what is popular, etc., and then ask some intelligent questions.

But honestly, if you really want to mod, start out by getting yourself a good set of tires. At the very least, go for some UHP all season. Better yet, get a set of lightweight rims (while keeping the same rim diameter) and mount some (high / ultra high / max / extreme) performance summer tires on the car. Power is useless when you can't lay it on the ground, and braking will improve from the tire change as well.

how does an ecu upgrade cause more wear and tear?  your engine is running regardless, its just running more efficient timing, more like it won't pass emission with the more aggressive air fuel timing.

Tires & wheels first, suspension, brakes and then engine mod. Just my 2 cents
作者: prelude318is    時間: 2009-4-25 18:13

Hondata reflash is one of the most effective power mod for your car.  To maximize the gain, it is the best to get intake, exhaust and header.  Depending what you want to achieve,  I think it is not too cost effective to make an AT car to go fast.  so it is better to get tires and suspension first.

Cars these days are "computers on wheel", my recommendation is... if you want to mod a car, you better start learning to fix your own car first.

When you mod the car, you can't keep it to the same noise level either way. There will be some difference. My preferences are based on stability over power - caz you can have all the power you want, but if your tires, brake, suspension are not up the speed, there's no point having more power. What you are asking is very typical "newbie" question where more power is better, but that's not neccessary true.

My preference:
Wheel+tire, brake (pads+rotors), intake, exhaust, suspension (spring+shocks).

Keep this in mind, to gain another HP/Torque, you need to consider how much you are investing. You can easily spend thousands to gain additional 20HP, but with that you can probably buy another car that has more speed.

I asked the original UR Pulley modder @ acurazine and he answers:
Some stock crank pulley might be a harmonic balancer such as those found on certain domestic engines, but it's not true from the TSX. The pulley itself is balanced as a rotating unit however.

So if it is not a harmonic balancer, any 'cons' of such mod?

If you drive around city, I would put more money down on shocks, springs, sway/tower bar and brakes. You will immediately see the effect when you can corner faster and harder. You will feel that the car is more lively. Then you can move on to intake and exhaust to give you slightly louder noise with about 10hp increase.

Things like crank pulley and ECU flashing is optional, and I don't think you would want to go that far.

Just the above can cost you about $3k or less, and will make your ride more interesting to drive.

I'm looking for better accelerations and traction.

So do you think getting CAI + header + flash a good idea? how much will they cost?

2 questions I would love to know.

1. what is your budget?
2. Do you care the look at all?  Or you just want better accel and traction only?

Because to have better accel and traction, it is not necessary to make it look better.  Your car can look completely stock but overall performance is enhanced. If you dont really care about the look, your goal can be achieved much cheaper.

For the power, Hondata reflash + intake, exhaust , header.   K-series stock I/H/E is pretty restrictive.  So it makes noticible difference if you replaced all those.  One more thing to mention.  Hondata reflash is running more aggressive ignition timing to get the power, so it is recommended to use highest octane gas available all the time.

For the traction,  you dont really need suspension and rims to get it. Unless you want a set of bling bling wheels with less body roll and more bouncy ride. Stock TSX double wishbone suspension is very good.  All you need is a set of good rubbers on your stock rims.  I would recommend Bridgestone Re11 or RE01r,  falken azenis rt615, Kumho XS, Toyo R1R, Dunlop Z1 star spec.  They are the gripest street tires on the market.  You shouldn't be able to drive those tires to limit on the street given the high level of dry traction. They also performs very well on wet too if it is not bald.  Bad thing is you may need to get a set of winter tires because they don't run very good on snow.

hope this help

thx prelude318is.

Budget: $2000-$3000?  not sure.. depends, but somehow I really like Hondata flash and the pulley set mod.

I don't quite care about the look.  I'm looking for slightly better straight line acceleration.  Suspension and brake is not as important for now, since I don't like extra rough ride.

The stock crank pulley/damper is what is called an audible harmonic damper, in laymen’s terms that means control of harmonics you would hear in the occupant compartment. Similar example is the factory use of baffles and resonators in the intake manifold. These methods are used because of the factories fanaticism about quiet in the occupant compartment. They have nothing to do with engine longevity... association of the stock crank pulley being the primary damper is incorrect, it is the dual mass flywheel that accomplishes this task. But even replacing this dual mass damper with an aluminum flywheel would not cause long-term damage as long as the flywheel were properly balanced.

now I'm having 2nd thought...

The link you post is the president of UR trying to argue some of the points that Steve Dinan made in his website.

Here is the link in case you have never read it before.
http://www.dinancars.com/bmw/technial-info/the-dangers-of-power-pulleys-and-understanding-the-harmonic-damper

The post of UR prez is long and it sounds like he is one of the young guy on RS.  I read half of it and I just couldn't read any longer because the points he made couldn't really convince me.

1. baffle plate and resonator is usually in the air intake but not intake manifold.
2. "we have over 250+ million owner driven miles out there with our product."  250+ million owner?   The number sounds a little too high to make me think he is making up the numbers.
3. I dont think it is crank pulley's job to reduce engine noise.

I just refuse to read any more after he said he got more than 250+ million owners.  I highly doubt the accuracy of this post.

Here is the reason why I dont' recommend crank pulley to you.

most of the engine mod is like risking your longevity of your motor for more power.   How I look at it is the risk and power gain ratio.

example: turbo the car will make 100hp gain which associate with higher chance of blown head gasket, broken con-rod, etc

but replacing crank pulley will make you 5hp gain in typical, now you are risking your crankshaft and main bearing for such a minimal gain.  It is up to you to think if the gain is worth the risk you are taking.

I put on UR lighten crank pulley on my EF race civic because I need the last drop of performance that the rulebook allowed me to do and i dont drive the car much on the street.  However, I will never put it on my daily driver cos i want my car to last a long time.

hope this help

hondata reflash is fairly safe.  Like I said before , the gain is done by aggressive fuel/ignition timing so it is recommended to have higest octane gas you can get all the time.

I didn't read all the details cuz I don't have that much time...but one quick look revealed that the statement was about "250+ million owner driven MILES" and NOT 250+ million owners.

Anyway, who can confirm if TSX uses a harmonic balancer or just a regular type crack pulley?  The argument is that TSX's engine is internally balanced by counter shafts, and the rubber stuff on the crank pulley just serves the purpose for killing audible noises and that's it.

Also, looks like the alternator is not putting out enough charge after the pulley mod.  A/C unit will probably lose some juice too?

IMHO.  I would suggest you consider getting a car with stick shift, it would be alot more fun than AT.  I simply wouldn't invest too much on a AT car except for exhaust, intake, but not suspension, and other important performance parts.

1> Don't worry about the brake for now, brake pads don't always improve braking power, as braking system these days are calibrated very well.  It's usually the brake fading problems which requires upgrading your brakes, or maybe the rotors.
2> My #1 suggestion is get yourself some of the best summer tires.  Lighter wheels would also help you accelerate and brake faster

Have fun!!
作者: chobit    時間: 2009-4-29 20:31

I am lucky enough that the OEM STi suspension is very stiff, and my upgrade with KW V3 Coilover actually improve ride quality and performance at the same time.  Therefore, it's not true that you can't gain both comfort and performance.  It's matter of rather you are willing to invest into some high quality shocks/spring setup or not.

Also remember not to just go low.

less body roll, more mechanical grip.
if you want comfort, your trade off would be performance, if u want performance you'd have to trade off with comfort.  and really depends whats your tolerance ...

Intake: possibly the icebox I posted last page
header: no good aftermarket header for TSX AT except from JDM... they all rattle at idle or require extra weilding / flex pipes... etc....
exhaust: don't want to sound too loud
tires: will put on some good high/ultra performance all-season, no summer tires 'cause I don't wanna invest extra rim and yet another set of winter tires...
light rims: they are so expensive.. Also, sexy rims don't look good w/o lowered.
Hondata flash: seems useless... it is hard to drive at high rpm to gain the additional power.....

I should limit myself to upgrade only 1 part per year max... haha... that's why I go with sway bar first, cheap and good for my car's handling.  Can't get addicted...

Intake: possibly the icebox I posted last page
header: no good aftermarket header for TSX AT except from JDM... they all rattle at idle or require extra weilding / flex pipes... etc....
exhaust: don't ...

So you mean you are not going to 改車?  How about add some stickers? I heard that stickers add 10hp each.

but you cannot tell a lot of mod from outside. The car can look totally stock (except wheel/tires...) and all mod inside.
作者: Mr.JPG    時間: 2009-4-30 09:38

you can always buy Rota DTP wheel and put a volk sticker on them
lower then on spring. It should fit your modification budget.
作者: MSN04    時間: 2009-4-30 10:09

Intake: mugen CF box is pretty good in terms of fitment and quality (minimal gain tho)
header: i agree with u on this one.  JDM is the way to go.  top-notch quality
exhaust: mugen exhaust sounds just right.  not loud, very sporty
tires: all season really sucks on snow tho... may be buy cheap all seaon or cheap summer tire for summer setup, and buy winter tires to put on ur original tsx wheels?
light rims: they are so expensive.. Also, sexy rims don't look good w/o lowered.
Hondata flash: the flash make vtec comes at 3000 or 3500 rpm (i don't remember exactlyi) instead of 6000ish

Maybe 'cause TSX is already pretty nicely tuned, not much gain with cheap cheap after market parts... unless super-charged....
作者: chobit    時間: 2009-4-30 15:28

Seriously, if you are not going to get a diff car.  Just get yourself some good summer tires.  It will make a huge difference at every single corner you make fast or slow!  (Put in some swaybars as well)

For something fun to drive, but inexpensive + Potential (Get a 1st / 2nd generation Miata)
作者: LOK    時間: 2009-4-30 15:29

If you are planning to mod with "cheap cheap after market parts"... I think you better keep it stock.
From what I see, you don't know much about cars,  even you get your car super-charged, it's still useless.

Price list from a garage...

Hondata Flash.. $850 + tax
UR underdrive pulley set.. $475 + tax + ~$75 install
CT-Engineering Icebox intake.. $230 + tax + ~$100 install

$$$ $$$ $$$
作者: BarF1    時間: 2009-4-30 23:51

Underdrive pulley would cost more to install than the Intake box ...
作者: xelloss    時間: 2009-5-1 08:40

Header, intake and exhaust (cat back) do not need to be changed at once, your car still runs by just changing the muffler. however, have those 3 all changed, will have the best performance, according to the Dyno.  If you are just driving street, no need to replace all of them. A better air filter like K&N stock replacement, or if you want a little racing sounded, get a nice piece of muffler or the cat back (Tanabe Medalion Touring or Apexi World Sport II I suggest, nice and quite), that will do for Daily Driving already

I'm fine with the first 2... they're pretty quiet... but then...

作者: ACC-HE    時間: 2009-5-1 10:02

Mr. JPG, I think it has to do with... what gain those parts give me...

They seem to cost a lot but don't gain much, and does more harm than good.. (e.g. rattling header... loud...)

So factor in all the factors, if the cost is so high, rather get a new car la.

K&N stock replacement?  Do they really help at all?  or just superficial?
