Thanks !

i guess my bunny does fall into deep sleep sometimes
his eyes are closed and when we call him from far away he doesn't realize it until we're really close to him then he kind of gets startled a little and wakes up

bunnies need to be neutered/sprayed in order to be properly litter trained i think?

My bunny likes to sleep in my lap. I hold her in my lap for almost 1 hour every night when I watch TV. When she sleeps her eyes are almost closed and sometimes she takes a sudden deep breath in her sleep. When she wants to return to her cage she would lick my arm and let me know.
In fact, she likes to sleep in the lap of any one in my family.  She is 3.5  years old.
Rabbits sleep more and longer as they grow older.

No, bunnies need not to be neutered/sprayed in order to be litter trained. Just give them a litter box with shavings and some hay when they are young and they will learn to use it.

not all bunnies will sleep deeply.  out of my 3 bunnies (well, one passed away recently but he'll still be my bunny forever) only one ever went into deep sleep (flopped over in a relaxed position and eyes closed) and he rarely does that.  but it's the cutest thing you'll ever see.

bunnies generally rest instead of sleep.  they curl up into a ball or lay down with body flat.. and that's their resting position.  that's why they tend to rest a lot.  being a prey animal is hard, they always have to stay away...

as for litter training, spay/ neuter your bun first, find out where they like to pee (they usually pick one or two spots) then put a litterbox right there with their droppings in there.  if you want you can put their hay right next to/ inside the litterbox.  eventually they'll get used to it and use it loyally.  but keep in mind occasionally accidents happen.

rabbits are nocturnal animals
they sleep during the day time and come out to play at night

but alfalfa used to always deep sleep.  its sooooo cute
and sometimes she would even snore!

I'd never seen my bunny sleep... usualy just flops over or lays flat on the floor.
There was one instance when she was too sleepy, and I watched her eyes closed... But then I had a tickle in my throat and let out a very small cough, she woke up lu... T_T

My bunny has always been pretty good with her litter training.  But recently she starts pooping (no pee-pee tho) all over the place, even on my bed...
(Yah, she likes to jump onto my bed, and occasionally walks across my face when I'm sleeping... no poop on my face tho )
I don't know what's going on...  Maybe I should clean her litter box more often than before.

What do u guys use in the litter box?
I use wood pellets that can be bought from Rona.
I heard that some wood shavings aren't good for bunny's organs.

yeah i use wood pellets that are meant to be for fireplaces as well~
pine and cedar shavings are really harmful because of their fumes

I think once u start keeping a pet, you will be responsible for his/her medical bill.
Guess it's same as you. See whatz the vet's recommendation. I once paid a few hundred for my pet mouse's visit to the vet. And Shiro was having some blood in his peep. The vet gave him some medication but vet said that Shiro is too small and old to take an operation at that point. So it's better to let him stay around and go when it's time. I had him for > 3 years. Ppl said it's long for a lab white mouse. He was such a smart little guy.

i use firemaster wood pellets too!
so many bunny owners use that, no wonder the staff at rona know what they are for without me telling them lol.

i also use carefresh bedding... cuz one of my buns have what i called a "royal butt", wood pellets are too rough for her and she refuses to use it.. so i put carefresh on top for her royal butt to feel comfy

Rabbits are a prey animal. By nature, their most active times during a day is dawn and dusk, in order to stay away from daytime or nocturnal predators. They spend most of the rest of their time resting but must always stay alert due to their prey animal instincts, so they rarely go into deep sleep. They are also herbivores, which means that they must eat constantly to keep their digestive system in constant motion, if it stops moving then it could be fatal. So they probably wake up once in a while to eat.

For litter box I put a few sheets of newspaper at the very bottom, and put 'yesterday's news' pellets on top.. then top the box with some timothy hay.

we use carefresh because its supposingly better for the environment
and bunnies are very playful animals
they like to play jokes on people by putting poop on their beds
alfalfa has her own litter box that she uses, but she still used to put poop all over the bed too

alfalfa deep sleeping again
you can walk around and make noises and she would still be lying there sleeping.

i don't think the issue is about TOUCHING the shavings ar
it's the fumes of the shavings itself, plus the fumes it gives out when pee (ammonia) gets in contact with the shavings ah..
try not to use it la..?
we put the wood pellets in his pee box, and then put a layer of hay on top~

Train d ?

my bunny (and i think most bunnies) won't eat the hay if it's been peed/pooed on =p (thank goodness~)
some bunny supplies store sell hay racks~ but i dun think my bunny'd like it as much cuz he likes to pick out his fave hay first..~ if he's eating from a hay rack i think he eats less..
i just put the eating hay next to his pee box ja..~

i think you should put a little bit of hay in the litter box. cuz the wood pellets itself have an odor (not toxic). so the hay will make the litter box smell "friendlier" to the bunny~ and also when the wood pellets soak up the pee. it kinda degenerates into a powder form~ which is really messy when the bunny steps on it! so the hay makes it alot better cuz the pellets are underneath!
to train him leh.. spend a few days with him for the entire day.. or as long as you can~ push him and make him go into the litter box every now and then~ after he pees in there a few times.. he should be able to get used to it. OR if he pees anywhere else, soak up the pee with a paper towel and  leave it in the litter box. when the bunny smells his pee he's more likely to go in there to pee again~

here's a pic of the cage and the bunny =D
i put his hay on the paper towel .. (i usually put more than what i had in the picture)
and his litter box is actually super full in the picture as well~

My bunny stays in an unused toilet of mine, I just put the eating hay on the tiles. Whenever I clean the litter box, I put the hay that she didn't finish in the litter box, and give her fresh hay for eating.

My bunny is already litter trained, so I put hay there not to train her. It is more for a softer layer to stand on without standing right on the pellets. And they like to hang out around hay anyway.

The dangers of pine and cedar shavings is not direct contact, but the fumes that come from the wood in its unprocessed form. Small animals that breathe in those fumes long periods of time are likely to have health problems. Wood pellets ,on the other hand, are often processed to remove the oils that create those fumes and are safe, compared to any wood shavings. Some people say aspen shavings are safe but then its best to avoid all shavings.

i gotta change it about twice a day..~ =p

when I put both there she drinks mostly from the bowl, and it seems she drinks way more water from bowl than she did when I used to only have water bottle.

hm...we dont use water bottle at home either...
they just bite the tip and spills water all over the place...
maybe cuz bunnies are meant to drink water naturally from a pond (bowl) rather than a bottle?

treats for my bunnies are pretty much the same as you guys

although ajax likes to eat watermelon during the summer...
and my bunnies like to eat kale too..have you guys tried feeding kale, amongst the other veggies?

i tried once buying some air dried apple chips from this guy in granville island..he said it was air dried and no preservative and no flavoring...so i bought some and they loved it.  but its hard to find now since i dont wanna buy ones with flavoring or coloring in it

For food, I switch between romaine lettuce, A 菜, and spring greens mix for the main veggies.
I supplement those with alternating cilantro, parsley, carrot, or kale. My bunny loves kale, she will pick it out and eat those first.

Used to give some broccoli but I don't anymore because they gave rabbits lots of gas.

occasionally give very very thin slices of apple /pear / strawberry just for a taste, but I don't want her to eat too much sugarly stuff. I have cut down on carrots too.

For treats my bunny goes crazy when she smells or hears me shaking box/bag of Vita-Kraft Wildberry Yogurt Drops.

pet store bunny treats such as yogurt drops are bad for bunnies as they contain too much sugar... which can be lethal for a bunny.

banana has too much calcium which can cause kidney stones, leading to kidney disease... plus it has too much sugar and calories.

kale, only feed a little bit... again it's not good for the buns

No its not about farting or not.

A common killer of rabbits is GI Statis, or Gastro Intestinal Stasis. Basically something caused the rabbit's digestive track and intestines to stop moving, therefore they get constipated and stops eating and everything stops functioning altogether.

Rabbits cannot pass gas, and a buildup of gas in the stomach is a common cause of discomfort for the rabbit.  Since rabbits are very sensitive animals, a little bit of stress or discomfort can lead to GI Statis. That's why its best to stick to leafy greens as their main vegetable, and avoid broccoli or cauliflower or anything that has is mainly stem. My bun seems to get some gas from bak choi too so I have also stopped feeding bak choi, but different buns are different.

I only feed the yogurt drops once in a blue moon and cut down on fruits and and carrot and sweet stuff, because too much sweet stuff can cause diabetes in rabbits and other issues. Also rabbits have a sweet tooth so they may get picky and stop eating healthier vegetables

when they stop pooping..... and their tummy feels hard and gassy when you softly press on it..... but by then it might be to late

so best is to avoid food that gives gas

When you see that the rabbit's is suddenly not eating as much, or not eating at all, or not pooping, you know for sure they are sick. Then if the stomach feels hard and feels swollen/bloated, its very likely a gas buildup, although it could also be other illnesses. Watch out for these things and catch it early.

my bunny went to the vet 2 times cuz she stopped eating. first time she had to stay overnight at the vet.

For the 2nd time she stopped eating and had to wait until the next day to see the vet, I did some research on GI statis and I gave her some baby gas drops that night and she ended up staying only a few hours at the vet and can go home that day.

Then 3rd time when I found her eating less than usual (but not stopped eating yet), I caught her early and gave her some gas drops, and she was eating normal again the next day.

or only do it when nec.?

what is gas drops?

Baby gas relief drops, also known as Simethicone, you can buy it at any drug store or supermarket pharmacy section. It is meant for babies to help them get the gas out of their tummies, it is very mild and very safe for rabbits. Basically it collects the gas packets together and helps get the gas out of the rabbit's stomach. I like to get the brand " Little Tummies" because the gas drops is berry flavoured. If your rabbit has a stomach problem you should still bring them to a vet, the gas drops is only a precautionary thing you can do if you cannot go to a vet right away.

Gas doesn't build up over a long period of time. Usually if food is causing gas build up, you will know within a few hours that your rabbit is ill. So there is no point in giving it once a year because it doesn't really do anything when there is no gas.

Some good reads on what to do if you suspect GI Statis:

oxbow's critical care does magic... should keep a bag of those at home as precaution... you never know when you need it.

it's not just for gas problems, it can be for bunnies who are not eating for other reasons too.
