after 3 years of dineout, i think i'm gonna call it quits this year.
me & my hubby decided that it's not worth the while to try gourmet restaurants during this period. it's a hassle booking through phone/online... dates & preferable times are chaotic to reserve. when you get there, there are alot of very loud people (no offence, but often chinese that seems like they've never seen 大場面)...which ruins the atmosphere. i would appreciate it if they can watch their manners & be considerate of other diners you know. the food is not as good as regular days due to the heavy traffic, thus the service ain't as good either.

so we decided that we rather pay regular price...which ain't that big of a difference on regular days compare to dine out days.... probably just $10 more per person, where i can enjoy good food, good atmosphere.
作者: tsumorichisato    時間: 2008-1-2 15:59

Agree with alcoholic

The reason I wanna go fine dine is not just for the food, but also for the atmosphere. It's just way too crowded and during the dine out period and seems like we are "yum cha" in chinese restaurants . I don't find dine outs are really better deals cuz a lot of time I don't really like all the courses they offer. I have tried West for the last 2 years and I think this is the only restaurant I would go again.
作者: 布小熊    時間: 2008-1-2 16:10

Usually my goal for DOV is to try out new restaurants. This year's DOV list...doesn't have much to offer. I have booked a few of them for different reasons. I only have 3 on my list so far. And I am trying to go to casual restaurants for DOV so that the "DOV crowd" won't change the atmosphere of the restaurant.

West have their quality pretty well kept. it's one restaurant that i will go back...William Tell & Villa de Lupo i go back on regular basis. William Tell's chocolate souffle.... Villa's milk fed veal... yummy~! C is nice, however, i find their dine out menu haven't been done with much effort. atleast i've seen the trout on it for like 2 consecutive years.

i am so willing to pay for great food after a hard day of work. if i can't sit, enjoy, relax, & appreciate the food served...then that is not worth my time & $.

Cincin is on with $35 menu but detail is TBA.

New restaurant I tried to go are like Plan B and Flite, which I think none are on the list. Don't see any new restaurants that I recognize in the $35 category.

Lift is not very new, I went there Xmas of 06, I think it opened around summer 06 timeframe, possibly around as old as Figmint? Dark and candle lit with contemporary decors. Right by the water with a side view of Canada Place. Food is fine, but nothing mind blowing.
作者: Alcoholic    時間: 2008-1-3 19:35

I had my bday dinner at Plan B last month... the food is good, but rather small portion for it's price. i didn't know that, & their website wasn't up yet. if i knew earlier, than i woulda picked another place for group dinner lor~

i tried to book Flite for my bday...but it was fully booked when i called 1.5 weeks ahead. actually, they told me that they're booked a month in advance lor

anyone been to LIFT? worth trying?
作者: utopia    時間: 2008-1-7 16:25

I tried out DOV last year with Caveman but we are only okay with it. Like other LYK here, the environment is too loud and different kind of people will be around us. Not necessary Chinese are the one to blame. To be surprise, like the other posts about China people. They act normal in the fine dine restaurant, only their dress code is a bit "seven" and that's it.

Service was ok and I was sat by the window, so the view was beautiful with the fog that night. However, there were a white couple sitting next to me ...............make me feel like eating in a common cafeteria which I am supposed to be at a fine dine place lor. Other than that, service was good but food was a bit slow.
作者: utopia    時間: 2008-1-7 17:55

Talking about DOV.

Remember we never had any proper training or consulting in old LYK?

Not saying I will be the host but any single LYK should have their table for 6 by booking a table from DOV.

I just read this on the DOV facebook group:
The newly opened Plan B Lounge & Eatery in Yaletown was not permitted to be part of Dine Out this year because they opened too late in the year but are offering their own tasting menu at a $30 price per person.
This anxiously awaited new arrival to the Vancouver dining scene features some of the best tasting share plates in town from the creative culinary wizardry of Chef Ryan Zuvich.

Mind your manners during Dine Out
By: Claudia Kwan News1130

It’s time to expand your dining horizons with Dine Out Vancouver, which officially starts Wednesday. Judith Lane writes about food for the Georgia Strait, among other publications, and says reservations are already completely booked for some restaurants, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be full. “The biggest challenge is people who reserve at 10 different restaurants for them and their 5 friends, and don’t cancel the ones they don’t go to. That’s hideous, it’s mean, it costs the restaurants a lot of money, there are waiting lists, other people want to be there, so please cancel.” There is a silver lining to the jerkitude.  Even if a restaurant’s fully booked, go there and be prepared to wait. You might be able to luck into a table if someone else no-shows.

I tried Shady Island last nite, food is good and portion is very small.  I can say it's only enough for girls and not for boys.  A bit disappointed cause feels like you are dinning at some "HK style cafe" and ate that mini menu for the special price.  If you don't mind to have that small portion, you an try cause the seafood chowder, steak & cheese cake is really good.

I went to Joe Fortes yesterday and the food isn't stunning at all (would rated 5/10), and the environment is SO noisy I could barely hear the live piano playing. It's even nosier than a dim sum restaurant...

Worth a try as it's a land mark in Vancouver, but won't plan to go back for a very very long time!!!
作者: 布小熊    時間: 2008-1-20 23:57

I went to Gastropod yesterday and love the meal. Other than what is on the published DOV menu, they have extra menu items to choose from with $5 for appies (duck 2 ways and pan-seared scallops) $8 for mains (duck and venison).

I picked the duck appie and love it. (crispy outside with tender meat) All 4 of us ordered the pork shoulder as main and think it's  a well executed dish. I want go back to Gastropod for dinner some other time.

But well... I am really afraid of reviewing and recommending... cos some friend of mine went on a regular day and she said she didn't feel full after dinner there. But I was so full last night that I gave part of my main to my bf.

Sanifar offers this 3 small dishes set even on their regular menu. You can always order extra to share if one set isn't enough for your appetite.
They have nice deco (super high ceiling) and even have beds/laydown area with curtains upstaris. But it's tiring to sit on a bed for a full meal. I think there is a minimium charge for the upstair section on busy weekends. It's a fun place to have a party. Taste-wise, food is alright.

Out of the 3 restaurants what would you choose? (thinking of going to 2 of them)
1) Sequoia grill at the Teahouse (never been)
2) Feenies (with new chef - previously sous chef at Cioppino's)
3) Chambar

I tried Goldfish Pacific Kitchen in Yaletown.  Portion was extremly small for $35.  The main course was fish, but the portion of fish was the size of a deck of cards.  They served it with 2 pieces of gai lan on a big plate.  No bread, nor rice or nor even carrots.  The dessert was below average.  Appetizer was acceptable.  Overall rating 5/10

I also went to Chambar tonight.  I totally recommend it.
作者: bluemountain    時間: 2008-1-22 23:27

I am very disappointed DOV this year, most of the rest's dishes like tasting menu, very small.  If they want to compensate the cost, better not particpate in DOV.  Also, one of the Thai rest, when they post the menu in early Jan, they have 1 whole lobster in the main course, so my friend plan to go DOV there and she make reservation on line, then she just find they change their menu today and use 1/2 lobster and tiger prawn instead.  Very sad!   I doubt if you eat $15 DOV, how the quality of food they offer?

I tried their $15 menu tonight.  Food was good but their DOV menu is half the size of the normal portion.  The lasagna I had is half of the normal size, the cheesecake was sliced so thin (again half of the normal size).  But food was good though...

CinCin has good portion, no complaint. We were full.

I think C is way over hyped! We went tonight (our reservation is for 6:30p. We arrived at 6:20p and we see our table is empty, but the host made us wait for 10 full mins before seating us in?! The service is so so fair.... The server is not sincere at all, and most people who work there has no smile. The food isn't that great either. The fish is tasteless, and the desert doesn't taste good either. Maybe it's bcos of dine out... but definitely I would prefer Coast over C.

Dinner at Sequoia Grill on Sat was good. ^_^

I had their $25 menu and my bf took a $35 menu (almost everything from their regular menu). We are both happy with the service, our food and the env. ^_^

hi-lites:
- mussels + tasty sauce to be soaked by bread ~
- NY steak was very tender, juicy and full of sweet beef flavor.
- shortribs was fork tender. intense beef flavor as well (more savory)
  mushroom included was yummy!
- side veggies with the mains were nicely done, baby broccoli (Broccolini), green and white asparagus were crispy and seasoned right.
- chocolate truffle cake was silky smooth

- we got a table by the window and tables were pretty spread out. comfee

side note: we saw a poor couple (sitting at a table for 8-10 ppl) waited 40+ min for their late friends to arrive. They looked very upset... guess it would be hard for them to enjoy dinner like that...

It depends on what you like.... I personally like duck dishes so I picked the duck 2 ways. I tried the scallops and they are really good too. If you like raw oysters and don't mind a smaller portion for your DOV meal, then try it. I had it last year and really like the jelly and "snow" on top.

For main, all of us ordered the pork... so we don't know how other dishes taste like... You have to like fatty pork to enjoy that dish tho. (and it definately don't taste anything like chinese style pork) btw the sauce is made with egg yolk so it's not a light dish

dessert... I had the cheese plate. (cos I had the chocolate fondant last year and I love all kinds of cheese)
I think Ken and his friends tried out more different dishes. So let's see what is his recommandation.

Well, Chinese style pork dishes are delicious and there are so many styles of them.

Not that I don't like chinese style roasted or braised fatty pork. But I usually don't like asian elements in western dishes unless I know that I am going to a fusion restaurant. I don't want my order of duck from a french or west coast restaurant to taste like BBQ duck from China town.

tried the $45 menu @ Raincity grill tonite (they have both $35 and $45...$35: appetizer+main+dessert; $45 1 extra appetizer)...very good food and great service! just that the place is very crowded (tables are very close to each other)

also tried provence last week...food ma ma only..ok la...service is good

I try Transcontinential @ Waterfront Station, deco is good and very high ceiling.  Food is worth to pay, regular portion and not tasting menu.  We tried Salmon chowder, beef tenderon, halibut w/ coconut rice, chocolate cake and lemon pie for dessert.  All the food is perfect except the fish is overcooked.  $25 Menu and highly recommend.

went there last night...
had the duck for appy, pork shoulder and cheesecake...
i personally like chambar way way more...

Did you have the venison carpaccio as appie at Chambar? I agree that this is an outstanding appie! I love it.

But for the main, I think I perfer the pork shoulder than the mussels or the ruby trout. For me... the mussels dish is relatively easy to make (fresh mussels & trial and error). But there is NO WAY I even attemp to try "sous-vide" a pork shoulder or making the sabayon sauce.

Anyway, I enjoy my DOV at Chambar too. It's a great value for the $25 menu.
