I saw an interview on TV before: A woman said she text because she cannot let her friends think she ignored them. Is it the same with guys? I do not text because I am selfish and value my life more than my friends.

I do it cause I don't need to stare at my phone while I text. I'd just proofread it before sending at a red light...

I am not pro text n drive or anything. I think they should've banned texting already, and should have law for hands-free for cell phone for a LONG TIME and can't believe we are so behind the rest of the world on this...

However tho, I'm sick and tired of this 'anything that diverts your attention during driving should be banned' stupid argument. What pisses me off the most was when the radio said efforts have been made to push for 'complete ban of cell phone use' because 'study shows that even tho you are not playing with your phone, merely talking to it diverts your attention'.

I don't see any difference in terms of distractiveness between talking to a passenger and talking on the phone. If our argument is that talking on the phone diverts attention and thus shall be banned, then we should make all cars single passenger vehicles. More-over, these talks are completely unrealistic and can only come out of mouths of people without a brain. Do they actually think it's feasible to ban all form of communication on all passenger, and more importantly Commerical vehicles? Have they considered the impact on businesses and productivity?

Some might argue that safety > all else. Then we should, as I've argued, banned passengers (or at least talking/interacting) in cars, ban putting make-up on in cars, ban eating in the car, ban listening to radio in the car, etc. In fact, the most dangerous action of all involving vehicles is the act of driving itself, shouldn't we ban that first?

So first we failed to address the issue where people are causing hazardous situation by texting and driving or holding the phone and driving. Now that we are way behind the curve as compared to the rest of the world, we decide to look into the complete ban of cellphone use (including handsfree) as a form of knee jerk reaction. If this is in HK there woudl've been push (and there was) for handsfree only for a long time already. If this is HK, stupid politician who come up with unrealistic ideas would've been met with vocal opposition like Lik would've done in these forums. Yet when it comes to Vancouver, people are just sheeps to these short sighted and unrealistic policies.... Vancouver oh Vancouver, you never fail to disappoint me...

I guess we have different definition of the action that "divert" your attention during driving.

Talking on cell phone (holding the cell phone)?
Talking on cell phone (hand free)
SMS text msg
Talking to other passenger
Eating
Listening to radio
etc etc.

For me, the worst case is anything that take away one hand so that you have to hold the steering wheel with one hand only. Why? With one hand driving, it's not "quick" enough to react (or steer away) from any dangerous situation. In that sense, eating, talking w/ cell phone, sms are dangerous IMO. I don't see talking is that much of distraction but argueing w/ your passenger sure is.
Listening to radio on the other hand, is not as bad and I think sometimes it's necessary. It gives traffic info, and sometimes music could help the mind to focus (some people listen to radio while studying, same idea). Just my 2 cents.

Diverting your attention and taking off one hand is totally different issue. I can on purposely drive with 1 hand but pay full attention. On the other hand, I can be completely distracted with both hands operating vehicle controls (steering, shifting, etc)...

Besides, wasn't really directing my post to you specifically. Just pissed off about people that always up hold the stupid motto that anything diverts attention from driving shall be banned, because it's unrealistic and stupid - For example: http://www.vancouversun.com/tech ... /1710495/story.html

I can't believe that there's no political bodies opposing this stupid idea. I guess opposition parties, like NDP only oppose anything the Liberal is for, whether it is for the good or the bad. Hopeless government ruling a wonderful piece of land like Canada, how unfortunate.

Anything you do in the car other than driving WILL divert one's attention but that's not the problem. The problem is how much attention you need in order to safely operate a vehicle and everybody is different on this matter. Some people pay 100% attention but still end up in accidents. Some people drive with "one eye closed" and everything is fine. So knowing your limits is important, and please don't test your limits in an irresponsible way!

Having a law for this is just "preventive maintanence"...

"preventative" and "intrusive" is a fine line. If anything, to be preventative they should've passed hands-free only years ago. Now they yell that there should be a complete ban for cell phone use? Knee jerk reaction from our useless gov't and police is what I will call it.

usually i will wait till red light to type. But definitely I will wait till red light to proofread
