I believe girl's family pay for the wedding instead of the guy's family pay "lai gum" in western culture.

To break up now (after 6-7 years together) is tough; but still better than to divorce after married, or to tolerate more years after married but not feeling happy for the rest of your life. Listen, p ...

very true... my last relationship was even longer than hers... still need to broke up, better than divorce in the future and waste both person's extra few yrs.

I still don't understand why the 禮金 is so important.
I still think 禮金 = 賣女.

If the parents love their daughter, they will be happy if they know their daughter found a good man, instead of thinking that "oh, this guy only give me this much for 禮金, must not really love my daughter...".  Why so many ppl weight love by $ ?

Lok, it's really not about 禮金 only issue. It's about "r e s p e c t"! The gal's side didn't ask for a million dollar or so, but do you think $10 is a sincere offer? If he respects maggie/her family ...

That make sense to me now.  Sometimes, when you buy a present for gf on b-day or anniversary, maybe a few hundred dollars too.

And if he's so white washed, did he use 3 months of his salary to buy you a engagement ring?

Maybe your parents are too traditional, when I was with my CBC ex.  I NEVER bring anything to her family during Chinese new year, Mid-autumn fest, or even New years, x'mas.... I was always empty hands.  Her mom still like me so much, lol.

And I kinda stand on your bf's side on this -> "I can't separate the two" (between the way he treats me and the way he treats my family)
he marry you, not marry your family.  If i were him, i would just break up with you or 拍拖 forever lor.
