Vancouver-area RCMP say they have arrested two drivers after a pair of motorcycles were tracked by a police helicopter speeding though traffic, red lights and schools zones at speeds of more than 200 kilometres per hour.

On the video recording of the incident released by police, the two motorcycles can be seen running multiple red lights, passing on double lines, shoulders and exit lanes, nearly colliding with oncoming traffic, and doing in excess of 120 km/h in a school zone during school hours.

One of the motorcycles had a passenger on the back as the RCMP helicopter Air 1 tracked them from Coquitlam to North Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon, said Sgt. Peter Thiessen.
Pursued from the air

Coquitlam RCMP originally spotted one of the two motorcycle drivers doing stunts, and called in a description of the vehicles rather than start a dangerous vehicle pursuit.

The Air 1 helicopter then caught sight of the motorcycles on the Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam. The drivers were weaving in and out of traffic and passing on the shoulder at extremely high speed, Thiessen said in a statement released Thursday.

"Along Highway 1 in Burnaby both motorcycles were literally passing cars like they were standing still," said Thiessen.

Police attempted to stop the motorcycles near the Dollarton exit in North Vancouver, but one driver sped off. The helicopter tracked the motorcycle through several municipalities before the driver lost control and crashed near Imperial Boulevard in Burnaby.

Both motorcycles were impounded for seven days under the province's new Motor Vehicle Act for excessive speed, and police are considering charges of dangerous driving for both drivers, and flight from police for the second driver, said Thiessen.
