A woman who failed to declare more than seven kilograms of dried birds and commercially-packaged meat at the Vancouver International Airport was fined $1,000 in Richmond provincial court on Thursday.
Chao Yang, 25, a student from Victoria, pled guilty to failing to declare 7.5 kilograms of packaged beef, pork, chicken and duck products which Canada Border Services inspectors found in her luggage earlier this year.
In January, Yang returned to Vancouver from a trip to China but did not declare any meat.
The meat was found during an examination of her baggage, was seized and will be destroyed.
Canada Border Services' Faith St. John said there is always a risk of the introduction of foreign animal diseases when importing animals, their products and their by-products into Canada. Foreign animal diseases could have a devastating effect on Canada's agricultural industry. |
