BEIJING - China will have invested a total of 140.5 billion yuan ($21 billion) in its ambitious South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) project from 2006 to 2010, the country's water diversion authority said Monday. The investment accounted for 62 percent of the entire project's budget of 228.9 billion yuan ($34.2 billion), excluding the pollution control project of the eastern route and the project that protects the water supply source of the central route.

The investment accounted for 62 percent of the entire project's budget of 228.9 billion yuan, excluding the pollution control project of the eastern route and the project that protects the water supply source of the central route. The SNWD project will take water from the voluminous Yangtze River in the south to satisfy demand in the north's drought-prone cities, such as Beijing and Tianjin.

The eastern, central and western routes will each stretch more than 1,000 km.

Construction on the water diversion system began in 2002. The eastern route will start supplying water in 2013 and the principal part of the central route is scheduled for completion by 2013. The central route will start supplying water in 2014.

I wonder how much of that is lost to corruption.

Corruption is worse in Quebec than in China.

It is funny that anytime I post something about China, the self-hating morons would go off-topic and pick on it for no reasons. Corruption does exist in China and any other country, but that is another topic. We are talking about water resource here.

You moron, the Three Gorges dam is needed for hydro power, flood control and river navigation. All these three reasons are legitimate and beneficial for the country. Many other countries have big hydro power dams. It is funny that no one bashes those other big hydro power projects.

識唔色咩叫做勞民傷財呀,懵丙?如果南水北調又好似三峽工程咁大鑊嘅話,咁就死得人多囉~

You moron~~,
the Three Gorges dam is a success and the investment is money well spent. It is controlling floods, generating clean hydro power and at the same time allowing river navigation.

西北缺水年年如是。
如果有方法可以灌溉西北亦都係一件值得做既事。
唔好一味盲目反對叫人懵丙,

I agree with you that Lik is 盲目反對叫人懵丙.

起壩搬左成120萬人,
In the past, these people who lived along the rivers had to suffer from flooding every year. They didn't have reliable electricity and water supply. Now these people have been relocated to much better housing, with electricity and water supply.

浸左幾多歷史古蹟
Historical artifacts have been dug up and stored in the big brand new museums.

Even the 古迹 like ancient buildings and temples, have been moved, piece by piece, to higher grounds and then reconstructed together again.

You are right. When China builds a big hydro power dam, it is a problem. But how about all those other big hydro power dams all over the world?
