　　中新社北京3月28日电 中国北斗卫星导航系统工程总设计师孙家栋院士日前表示，2012年左右，“北斗”将首先具备覆盖亚太地区的定位、导航和授时以及短报文通讯服务能力。

　　据此间媒体报道，预计今年4月将发射第三颗倾斜同步轨道(IGSO)卫星，成功后北斗卫星系统就可形成区域导航定位能力。

　　中国工程院院士刘经南表示，完成布网的北斗卫星导航系统，将具备GPS没有的通讯功能。预计2012年左右，北斗卫星的导航可以覆盖亚太区域，北斗导航设备也会进入千家万户。他介绍，“北斗”芯片的价格与GPS相当，通过短报文通信功能，导航设备还可能投入到城市疏堵的工作中。

　　北斗卫星导航系统工程副总设计师李祖洪研究员介绍，中国建设北斗导航系统，就是为了建立一个与GPS等国际上其他导航定位卫星系统各有特色、兼容共享的系统。目前，国际上包括中国在内，只有美国、俄罗斯、欧洲四套卫星定位系统。

　　李祖洪说，北斗系统正在加速建设。今年将是系统加快进度的一年，中国正在与全球其他三大卫星导航系统赛跑，2020年左右，将建成覆盖全球的北斗卫星导航系统

Having your own GPS system saves you the money of using other people's GPS, and at the same time you can make money by selling your services to other countries. This is big money since telecommunications is growing rapidly all over the world.
