http://www.singtao.com/yesterday/chi/0430eo01.html

hahaha, be careful wor, if you do not have evidence, they can sue you for defamation and slander.

Like I said, the rise of China is drawing a lot of jealousy and sour grapes, from both foreigners and self-hating people.

From what I know, the money was probably spent on infrastructure in Shanghai which can further promote economic development, like new subway lines, new airport expansion at Honqiao, the development of the Bund area, relocation of residents to new housing from old housing at the Expo site etc, and of course the actual preparation of the Shanghai Expo itself. The other countries pay for the building of their own pavilions.

hahaha, you moron, do you know a lot of these older buildings were about to collapse, like some of those in Hong Kong?
These conservationists don't realize that there are still people living in these old buildings, where there are no elevators or toilets. Of course these conservationists do not live in it themselves and don't pay for the maintenance.

Some old buildings are certainly worth preserving, but not those without too much character.

Shanghai to restore historic Bund buildings before World Expo

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-08/10/content_11855844.htm

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Restoration of historic "Bund Origin" buildings, including the recently saved Shanghai Rowing Club, has started and is expected to be finished before the 2010 World Expo starts in May, the Shanghai Daily reported Monday.

Construction authorities were quoted by the English newspaper as saying the "Bund Origin" area, regarded as the origin of the Bund and the city, is 170,000 square meters centered on the confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek.

The area contains many historic buildings and 14 of them are on the city's protected buildings list, which means they cannot be torn down.

Scaffolding has been erected outside the buildings to repair damaged parts, and architecture experts have been invited to make restoration plans and help find tiles and wood flooring similar to the original materials.

The buildings will be also developed to improve their function, Pan Yihua, from the Shanghai New Huangpu Real Estate Co Ltd, the developer of the "Bund Origin", was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The former British Consulate, built in 1873, will be turned into a public place that can hold major events and art exhibitions. A total of 18,000 square meters of insignificant buildings around the former consulate will be demolished to make a public park on the Bund.

The restored Union Church, built in 1866, is expected to house a local civil affairs department office for issuing marriage certificates.

The church was almost demolished after a big fire in the abandoned building in 2007 but was saved by public protest.

The Shanghai Rowing Club did not originally make the city's protected buildings list and was earmarked for demolition last month but it was found to have high historical value during the development of the "Bund Origin" project and has been saved.

The Shanghai Rowing Club was actually selected to be preserved and restored. I don't know why the Time magazine article lied about it. Just another lie from the American media.

"""relocation of residents to new housing from old housing at the Expo site etc,"""

do those reside ...

I don't know much they receive. But at least new housing provided is much better than old housing where there was no elevators, proper toilets or heating.
How much do you think a decades old apartment without elevators, proper toilets or heating is worth?
You would think that new apartments with elevators, toilets and heating are worth a lot more.
