LOL, I am just saying what I think their reason was. I didn't say it was right to use simplified characters.

If their reason was to raise the literacy levels among the peasants, then they should switch back to traditional characters, since the education level has improved so much that the literacy rate is at least 92+%.

The ethnic Chinese in Taiwan/Singapore/Malaysia have been using Mandarin for a long time.
Singapore and Malaysia also decided to adopt the simplified characters. China didn't force them at all.

I believe UBC's Mandarin program has switched to simplified characters.
