I don't think there are more conflicts than before. Many of these issues, like Diaoyu islands, South China sea islands, and border conflicts with India, have been around for a few decades. The difference is that, now China is getting strong enough to assert its claims, more forcefully than before. Also, there is the US which is supporting those smaller countries like Japan and the Philippines to go against China.
Unless you want China to appease other nations, by giving up all its territorial claims voluntarily, just to look good. Are you willing to give up lands to other countries? It looks like China is in a difficult situation. If China does nothing, it will lose those disputed territories. If China acts more forcefully to assert its claims, all these smaller countries together with the US will try to portray China as the bad guy.
China is centrally located in east Asia, and therefore has lots of neighboring countries. The geographic advantage of the US is that it has relatively fewer neighbors, and they remotely support countries like Japan and Philippines to go against China in territorial disputes. |
