Welcome to Canada.  

I met a girl who joined working holidays and also from Hong Kong when I took a course last year.  She just went back to HK after spending 1.5 yrs in Canada.  Other than studying, she worked in a fast food shop.  Afterwards, she was working in a lodge at Lake Louise when she travelled to Alberta.  During her stayed in Canada, she learnt snowboard, saw north pole light and tried different things.  Hope you'd also have a fruitful and incredible experience in Canada. :)

I believe she extended her vistor visa that allows her to stay here for additional 6 months.  However, she cannot get a vaild work permit anymore once her original work permit expired. I guess it happens just like what you said "1 year is the maximum".
