MONTREAL, QC. (NEWS1130) - It's the next chapter in the horror story Clifford Olson inflicted upon this country. The man who killed 11 young people in the Lower Mainland during the 1980s has a parole hearing in Quebec.
The hearing is the third time the 70-year-old Olson will try for parole, and every hearing comes with statements from the families of victims who are forced to dredge up their tragedy again and again.
But it is our justice system and Vancouver criminal defense lawyer Emmet Duncan says it's one that doesn't discriminate. "It's important to recognize that under the legislation that governs the granting of paroles, there are no categories for notorious offenders or run-of-the-mill offenders."
The last time Olson applied for parole was in 2006 and he was quickly turned down. The parole board had said he was still considered at high risk to re-offend. His application today is considered a long shot.
The child killer is serving life in prison at one of Canada's maximum-security prison just outside of Montreal.
Earlier this year, Olson was making headlines when it was revealed he had been collecting taxpayer-funded old-age security benefits. That's something the federal government is working to change.
