Crews rescue Ohly the stranded Burnese Mountain dog

Ohly, a Bernese Mountain dog stranded in a deep ravine on Mount Seymour for 12 days has been rescued.
Tim Jones, a spokesman for North Shore Search and Rescue, said the dog has been found safe and was taken out of the area known as Suicide Gully by helicopter Saturday afternoon.
He said rescuers were in the process of getting all the volunteers safely out of the gully. A veterinarian was on site to examine Ohly for signs of dehydration or frostbite but Jones said he appeared to be OK.
Ohly went missing Nov. 25 when he wandered off from his owners on a snowshoe trek. He was spotted Thursday, which led to online pleas to help rescue the stranded animal.
Jones said rescuers became concerned after a Facebook page was set up calling for people to go out and search for the dog.
More than 800 people had "liked" the page by Saturday morning, and users were posting about gathering volunteers for the search.
Jones said the reason search and rescue became involved was because of a fear that dozens of untrained citizens would venture out into the avalanche-prone area.
Saturday's helicopter rescue will cost about $5,000 and the owners, through the North Shore Search and Rescue, are asking for donations to help cover the cost.

On Friday, Jones warned against people risking their lives to search for the dog in the steep and avalanche-prone terrain. He said Ohly was well-equipped to handle being outdoors and there was no immediate concern for his safety.
Rescuers came within 1.5 metres of Ohly on Thursday afternoon and made several attempts to coax the dog out of the area; however, he kept running away.
Last month, three members of an American family died after trying to rescue a dog in dangerous surf.
Howard Kuljian, his wife Mary Scott and their 16-year-old son Gregory were at a beach in California when their dog ran off into waves up to three metres high. They tried to save the dog but ended up engulfed by the rolling waters.
The dog later made it back to the beach unharmed.
