We seldom carry umbrella in Vancouver either since we are lazy.  The rain here was never heavy and people usually just need to walk to/from their vehicles.

However, when we went back to HK this year, we figure we have to carry umbrella.  Not only because of the rain could be stupidly heavy, but more important is that the sun is too bright for us to handle.
