i know what you mean, but your definition of hit hit hand, may not be the same as your children wor.  different generation ma.  i talked to my mum once regard to punishment, she didn't feel she punish me too much, because she just compare "what she did to me" to "what my grandparents did to her". also, if your son make the same mistake again and again, will you hit him more & more?  if he doesn't feel sorry when you punish him, will you hit him until he says sorry?  
i grown up with punishment, but it didn't make me to stop what i want to do.  just make me hate my parents when i was young.  whenever my mum hit me, i will think 打我打死我呀.  so i don't think it is a good solution
