I fully agree that the Diaoyu Islands should have belonged to China, but as much as I hate to admit, by international laws and standards, the effective "ownership rights" have long been lost to Japan now. And this is entirely due to the incompetency and lack of action on both PRC and ROC.

Since the 50's (might even have been a bit earlier), Japan has continually exercised their "ownership rights" by occupying the Diaoyu Islands, building structures on it, and petrolling the waters close by with their "defence" ships, while China has only occasionally voiced the ownership of the islands in foreign affair speeches while taking zero official government action. By international standards, a continual lack of presence, occupation, and petrolling the area on China's part effectively means they have forfeited their ownership claims on the piece of land. On the other hand, Japan has continually been doing this for 50+ years. Taken to the international courts, China would most definitely lose the ownership claims to Japan.

A simple analogy is, consider what happens when I move into an empty house that you originally owned. I live there for 50 years and all you do is tell people the house is yours, not mine while taking zero real action to kick me out. In 50 year's time, any reasonable law court would have concluded that your lack of action is simply an admission on your part that you have given up ownership of the house, and that the place now belongs to me.

This is what is happening now with the Diaoyu Islands. It has been forever lost to Japan because of the lack of action from China and its government.

I guess what you want to say the most is -- the ownership of Hong Kong shall have been lost to UK forever long long time ago.rockypath

You can't deny that Diaoyu Islands are under Taiwan province, and the inaction of the ROC in Taiwan has to take responsibility for this situation.

Did you even read my post? After 50+ years worth of inaction, Japan has every right at the international stage to claim the Diaoyu Islands as their land. And whose fault is this? Both the PRC and the ROC.

Why do I even bother with morons like you?

What you fail to see, Prelude, is that the while a large scale war will indeed have the potential to both divert attention away from the weak US economy and possibly even revive it in much the same way as WWII did back in the 40's, any sort of real war against China, especially at this point in time, is completely incomprehensible because:

1) the US military has already been way overtaxed and stretched by the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns.
2) the US and Mainland Chinese economies are so deeply intertwined that they are practically inseparable. If the US try to take any harsh and severe action against China, the US will end up severely damaging their own economy.
3) Furthermore, let's not forget that Mainland China is the biggest debt holder against the US. Mainland China has the trump card of dumping their US treasury bonds to totally send the US economy into the abyss. Obviously, this will severely hurt China as well, but as an act of retaliation, it is certainly conceivable as well.

Even if China and the US were to enter into a US-Russia style cold war at this point in time, China is arguably in a better position than the US as it can still turn to its internal economy and the Middle East, Africa, and South America for economic opportunities. In an all out game of chicken, it is the US that has more to lose.

It's like you owned a land, but you were weak, no money, no power and no one cared much about you, and some strong gangster dude with power and money built a house in your land and lived there for many years, and you couldn't do anything about it because nobody supported you and you were not big enough to fight him.  Does it make it that the gangster should be the owner of the land?
Prelude

You are missing the point. Had the little man repeatedly complained to the authorities and even tried to kick the big bad gangster out, then there would have been more legitimacy to the old ownership claim. But all China (both PRC and ROC) has done for the past 50 years is to set the issue aside, and only make the occasional announcement that the house is theirs while taking no official action at all. By international standards, this simply amounts to your voluntary forfeiting of the land ownership claims. In the mean time, Japan has repeatedly used it naval forces to petrol the nearby seas and kick people out of the nearby areas.

LOL~

Selling my country out? How am I doing that?

I am simply laying out the facts. I would very much like to see the Diaoyu Islands belonging to China (whichever definition of China that may be), but given the lack of action that China has shown over the past 50+ years, international law simply dictates that China has lost the sovereign right on the islands.

And you want me to enrich my knowledge? Look who is lacking that, and look who is BS-ing here?

Moron~

p.s. And btw, I have never been shy to admit that Canada is the one and only country where my loyalty lies. As far back as I can recall, I have never done anything treasonous to Canada. And while I'm at it, allow me to remind you that if you were a naturalized Canadian citizen, you have sworn the oath to be loyal to Canada as well. But from what I can see, you have only pledged your loyalty to Grandfather as his lap dog.

Soli

Back to Diaoyu Island and using your example of house occupancy. I have a house which I do not live in. I asked (or hired) you to upkeep the house for me. Can you claim the ownership of the house 30 years later since you are the person who takes care of the house?
