asking for $ is fine, if he post it for free like on craigslist or something people will just take the poor hamsters in for snake food.  it is actually a good thing to ask for money, just to screen those snake owners out

if you really care so much about the hamsters, i would suggest you to contact local small animal rescues and see if they can take the hamsters in... that is, if you are truly asking for money just because you care about them (in that case you wont care if there is money involved when they go to good hands)

i'm not sure if they would take the hamster in as they are constantly full, but at least try?
