Proposed puppy ban upsets pet store owner

Richmond is trying to ban retail dog sale. Pet store owner is of coz unhappy. It is their business. They are saying children is losing a place to interact with puppies.

Do you think it is the right thing to do?

For me, I don't think living animals should be a  product that can be bought and sold.

ban all the pet stores in canada haha

even thought pet stores can sell pups
the children can 't react with those animals in the store cuz they can't touch anything but just watching

If the pet store is selling puppies from puppy mill, definitely ban that store.  Otherwise, no.  If people don't go to a pet store (good one) to buy their pets, they will go to other place, say craigslist.  People there "may" involve with puppy mill too.  Now could the City bans those pet selling???

I don't consider a pet as a product, but eventually when you want to bring a pet home, there will be money involve.  (not talking about adopting from SPCA)

I personally won't (and didn't) buy my puppies from pet stores because I feel that you really need to get to know the breeder before you can buy a puppy. I agree that having puppies in pet shop increases the chances of people doing "impulse puppy buying", which can lead to puppies being abandoned if the people who bought them were not ready (I lived with a girl once that bought a puppy from a pet shop, and gave it away in 3 months time?)

I don't know if banning the sale would really lower the number of puppy mills though....I really hope so!

It's the puppy mills should be banned. However, almost all puppies selling at pet stores are from puppy mills. Even puppies are not from puppy mills, it's the living environment of the pet stores not suitable for puppies. People shouldn't expect to buy a happy and healthy puppy from any pet store. I bought mine directly from a breeder.

Why are puppy mills so bad?

Are they like factory who just breed the dog to make money and not care about the dog's health and happiness?

Yes, often you hear about dogs that are locked up just for breeding purposes, and they have no freedom to exercise or even go outside. Their personality becomes very aggressive towards humans and other dogs. Often they have a lot of other health issues. When they are no longer in their prime breeding age they are discarded of.

I met a family who adopted a female Boston Terrier from a puppy mill. At the age of 2 (they think), she has already had litters of puppies. She has behavior issues and does not like to be with other dogs (especially male dogs). It is so sad to see because she still has such a long life ahead of her, yet she is already scared by previous events.
