You can read more from the link above. Usually mat leave are unpaid and they get support from EI. If the employer agrees to pay for the salary anyways, that's a different story.

    Mat leave is nothing something invented only for Canada. It's very common around the world, including HK. http://www.labour.gov.hk/eng/faq/cap57h_whole.htm#q1

  Maternity leave is a benefit we should deserve for paying such high tax.  IMHO, mat leave is no different than any other situations where people get laid off and have to get support from EI.
