The B.C. Supreme Court has struck down a Vancouver bylaw banning the keeping of cetaceans in city parks. The park board passed the bylaw banning the practice in May 2017, but a B.C. Supreme Court judge has found that the board does not have the jurisdiction to change the Vancouver charter as required to implement the ban. The Vancouver Aquarium recently announced it would be ending its whale and dolphin captivity programs. The aquarium only has one remaining captive cetacean, a Pacific white-sided dolphin named Helen.
