I'm not saying leaving the baby alone is right but sometimes even staying home with the baby couldn't avoid things like this too.   There are so many possibilities for SID (Sudden Infant Dealth), even if the mom is home she might not even noticed anything before the baby died.

For a SID case, there will be no sign whatsoever; baby dies in its sleep.  When the mom discovers her baby is dead it's already too late.
