no offense ... spend the initial $ to go to a photography class ... say Langara.

by the time you finish the class you will realize why you should and shouldn't have bought certain equipment.

(e.g. a lot of my friends end up selling their lense after the class cos it just won't fit their style)

after many years .. the only pieces I haven't swapped out from the initial purchase ...

B+W MRC filters and carbon tripod.

if you use expensive glass then don't go cheap on filters .. it's like buying a Porsche but putting cheap tires on them.

I like B+W, Heliopan ... brass rings, multicoated (MRC) .. for wide angle use the ultra slim version.

The $ adds up quickly though.

Hi CAT,

I use both Hoya S-HMC UV or B+W UV filters.  As for polarizing Filter, save your money and buy a good one.  I found that the cheap ones really hunt the pictures more.

Someone here suggested to get remote/shutter release.  Personally, I hardly use it, I use the timer + Mirror lock-up most of the time in place of the remote/shutter release.

Mirror locks is a must either u use timer, cable release or remote.  Just that personally I like cable release more, and i think its handy for bulb mode too.
I use Arcatech V2 ballhead, Gitzo GT-1540 tripod, and RRS L plates for my cameras.  You can get more info at http://acratech.net and youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwRxpYleEJY
Personally I really like my ballhead, its less then 1lbs, and can hold up to 25lbs.  When I want more control I just don't turn the knob too tight and it still hold my lens pretty steady.

again....just my own opinion, I think they are easier to attach and remove from the ballhead then the ones that comes in package (ballhead & camera plate) , and you can change vertical and horizontal easily.  I think if you are getting an entry level dslr, most set up in the market will do just fine (as your camera & lens will not be as heavy or unequal balance).  As you upgrade your body or heavier longer tele lens then consider more advanced gear later on.  coz the RRS L plate cost around 150 usd + shipping and because of their way of shipping....there will be a custom tax add on when it arrive to your door, so you would be looking for 250 to near 300 range (especially cnd are low now).  So if you want to get a tripod just get something from the manfrotto 190 range and see what's good deal, As you learn more or feel the need of another tripod then just sell the old one at bccamera or craigslist and get another one (by that time you know what you really wants, dun need to waste money).
