If you won't have much gear yet, and I assume you are a girl..

550D is pretty good, $999 with 2 lens (18-55/55-250) then add a 50mm F1.8 ( ~ $130) and a 430 flash light ~ $350 (or whatever)  then you are good to go..

So.. ~ $1500, decent package, good range, great camera and low cost.

Don't think professional grade cameras are perfect! Even so called professional cameras, there are professional photographers still complaining for some issues, those cameras still have lots of room to get improved.
A beginner level DSLR is good for a newbie to start, if you really want to learn about DSLR. In fact, if you don't know much about DSLR and you don't spend some time to learn, any prosumer camera can take much better pictures than a DSLR.

Yeah ..  not sure if anymore BETTER deal later ..

But usually, End of Nov/Early Dec ..  best deal for Canon DSLR..

Well, they just dropped the price .. big time ..
