So basically I just tell them I know there is such plan, and ask them to work it out for me?

my contract is done in October, so still have 4 more months to go
would I be too early to call?

Well Last Time I call...
They would not send mi through retention...
they say retention is only for customer leaving fido...
But later on... I call again they say... ur plan is under retention...
They pass mi to retention...
I still havn't got my bill yet... hope dere is nothing wrong w/ it...
N... I think is easy 2 ask for a better plan... when U still hav a few month left...
Cuz after my contract expiry... they wouldn't give mi any discount... LOL

so I just renew my old contract... another 3 year... nothing new was added...
cuz My frd has the same thing for $40 only... but fido wouldn't let mi take that plan...
If is ur first time calling for retention plan... try not to let them know U know abt the retention plan... in that way is easier 2 get a better deal...

how come I shouldn't let them know that I know about the retention plan ar?

what was the reason fido given to you when they declined letting you to have the same plan as you friend?

My approach is different, because I just want to give an impression to the CSR that I know what I am doing and all I want is a good deal and don't waste my time.

There is no more retention department anymore. Basically any CSR have the authority to offer retention if you ask nicely and give your reasons. It is really nothing new to them that people wants the best deal. Please bear in mind that Fido is a business, not charity, if you help them do their job, they will help you in return; but please don't blindly demanding retention plans w/o doing some research on your end - check other companies and see their offerings. If you have corporate plans, use that too during the bargaining process.

You can call 6 months prior to expire, but it really adds whatever years on the reminder of the current contract.

I typically will start telling them that my contract is up and I want to see what is their current retention offerings and if they could do better than what I have now. Sometimes, they might have new plans that are better; not neccessary all the time, just like my case, where mine old plan cannot go any lower.

The CSR will probably haggle with you for a bit, but they ultimately wanted a longer contract - 2 years minimum, 3 years preferred. I started out with wanting a 2 years contract.. and ended up closing the deal with 3 years contracts when they give me 1GB data + 100 extra min for $20 together (reg is $40) plus the old plan that I have (total $53 after tax).

Worst comes to worst, you can always end the call nicely by telling the CSR that you are going to think about it and call again to bargain at another time. Do not give in on the first call if no good deal is negotiated.

bumping this up

I got called by a fido rep today and I told him I would like to upgrade to an ip4
and was wondering if there is any good deal if I sign a 3 yr contract with them
but the only thing the rep offered me was charging only $3 for caller display, and he said I need to have the 500mb option for an iphone, which comes to $58 + tax with my current voice play ($30)

so I was kinda disappointed.......and told him I wanted to think about it first and got them to call back next week.

Anybody know what I can do to lower the payment?
I have looked at the major competitors, it's usually about $50/month with 500mb, 200min, unlimited evening and weekend, talk/text to 5 favorite number (and of course Caller id extra)

so I don't really know what voice/data plan can I bring up to ask fido to match......
what i really need is my unlimited incoming from my current plan

When you want iPhone from the carrier, you already set yourself up for paying more. You probably better off buying the phone at full price at Apple store, then go with the lowest retention voice plan then add 500MB flex data.

This should run for about $40 or so. Just don't mention about iPhone and they won't rip you off.
