CITROEN has released the first details of the new C4 Picasso, highlighting its larger boot, lower emissions and two large colour displays.

The sharply-styled model, which Citroen claims is the first compact MPV to offer the possibility to dip below the 100g/km threshold for free road tax, uses an entirely new modular platform that has enabled up to 140kg to be saved and interior space to be increased thanks to a front overhang that has been shortened by 70mm.
The boot now measures 537 litres, according to the German VDA measurement system that involves squeezing as many industry-standard one-litre blocks into the available space as possible. It is a truer representation of everyday practical space than the ‘liquid’ measurement of a boot’s volume that calculates its maximum theoretical capacity.
A range of engines at the car’s launch will include new Euro 6 emissions regulations compliant diesels initially spanning power outputs from 89bhp to 148bhp. Manual and automated manual gearboxes will also be available, with a traditional automatic transmission pencilled in for early 2014.
The highlights of the new engine line-up include the entry-level 89bhp e-HDi with 74mpg and just 98g/km of CO2 making it very cost-effective. Arguably even better is the 148bhp BlueHDi diesel, which as well as being much more gutsy still only emits 110g/km of carbon dioxide.
A seven-inch touch-screen interface sits on the centre console beneath a panoramic 12-inch display recessed into the dashboard. The former acts chiefly as the control unit, while the latter works as the main readout.
Steps have been taken to reduce noise and vibration in this model, like electric power steering that is claimed to remove unwanted harshness from the road.
Technology has also seen a boost, with systems like active cruise control, lane-departure warning and blind spot monitoring joining automatic main beam operation and Citroen eTouch, which is an emergency services contact system that activates following an accident and reports the location of the car in the local language.
