Also depends on the budget, and how "heavy" you want to carry ...

Well, D700+grip is not small or lighter then D3s, however, you have the flexibility to NOT use the grip, nor external flash.

Again, if better high iso performance is what you need, D700 or D3s can do the job .. much much better then D300.

I rarely do more then iso 2000 ...  other then taking some sleeping picture of my little baby ...

Plus as Like gor said, if you don't want to use flash nor tripod, and not using a fast lens, and need to shoot at iso .. get some noise reduction software la...

why do you need 5 secs?

"f2.8 at 1/25 is enough for most indoor lightings", but may I know at what ISO and if flash is needed?
Unless you only shoot for dead objects (stationary), even with IS, the subject you're shooting may be moving around, which 1/25 you might not have hand/camera shake but may still result a blurry picture.
If people only rely on IS system and fast lens, then I don't think too much skill is needed la.

I put my D300 and 70-200 zoom f2.8 VRII on mono pod with MF and slow shutter speed (1/50, 1/30 or 1/25) or handheld if I need to walk around. But some picture blurred when speakers shaking heads or waving their hands.  External flash is not allowed in my situation. Sometimes I need to shoot indoor basketball games, slow shutter speed can't help.  I prefer to spend less on body but lens, just need to find out if my job requirement is far beyond D300's capability.

As always, you'll get a better final product when you shoot RAW la, but even if you were only shooting JPEG, you can still have Noise Ninja process it wor?

This is a good example for why IS or VR lens doesn't work in some situations (which many people don't understand). Cuz the subject you're shooting is moving in a faster speed than you set on your camera that can freeze their motion in order to result a reasonable sharp picture. Plus, flash is not allowed, the only solution is to use higher ISO.

Then more reasonable solution will be 85 f1.4 lens on D300.  2 stop faster so you can shoot with 2x of shutter speed.

I like to use 85.4 and love the lens .. but I won't say it is a good lens for indoor sports event la...

282 is one great lens, and the Nikon one is good value too. ^_^
