Photo mags

I think I opened a post on photo mags a few years back.  I just threw away almost 100kg of magazines this week.  I realized 90% of the photo mags that I subscribed to do not interest me anymore.

Now I only subscribe to

LFI
Shots
Black & White
Aperture

Any other good magazines that focus on b&w and/or fine art photography?

Try books instead.  I find if someone spends months or even yr to write a book, usually they have good information to share, instead of soup of the day like in magazine articles.

Good read:
Michael Freeman - The photographer's eye.

ya I have tons of books.  But a magazine sometimes would introduce some new photographers or even old ones who you have never heard of.  Sometimes they would also feature individual portfolios that can surprise you.

Photographer's eye - I read it at the bookstore a year back and thought it was amazing.  Today I gave it a 2nd quick read at the same bookstore and didn't find anything new to me.  I think all the rules are there for you to learn but it's really practicing and learning from your own mistakes that help you improve.  Now I actually want to find a way break those rules and cliches yet still create a nice and balanced photograph.

this is my most recent buy

I think they are more poison than food though.
Like the free Rangefinder crap that I get every month, all you see there is just ads for gears and wedding photography.

You know,
I realized a while ago (maybe middle last year?) that if you need to read these books to learn composition, chances are you won't go too far.  From a commercial point of view, it makes sense to publish books like that to teach you what makes a photograph good.  But if you are really into photography and have a talent for it, all you need to do is to shoot what you think looks good to you.  There's no need for rules or tutorials.  To improve your composition, you just have to learn from your mistakes and figure out what you need to do the next time to get a better frame.

And of course, shooting 100 photos is better than reading 100 pages (if you have the talent).

i am in low lower level of food chain ma.  The other way to say it is: if you don't have a taste for it, then no books would help.

There is actually another book of the same title by John Szarkowski.  Now, that one is the real thing, if you want to step up to the next level.

have to check this out.  It is in library!   I don't remember this person, but somewhere I saw his funny photographs about dogs, and thought they were very cool.

thanks
