From Photo.net
Apparently Canon is testing a new 28-135 Lens. This is a direct quote I received via email.

Canon is currently performing research, prototyping & testing new 28-135mm F4 L IS; less wide angle and more telephoto. Engineering says it would require 2 extra LD glass elements; shifting price to an additional $800 CAD of the original 28-135mm MSRP. such a lens would cost and estimated $1549 MSRP. It is also Canons next generation Image Stabilization will be released; called “IS2″, where the two additional long magnets are present, where larger float distance of separation between groups; yielding up to now 5 stops of effective stabilization; both in longitudinal and lateral vibrations will be dampened. IS2 will consume approximately 20% battery power.

Mount: EF
Focal length 28 – 135 mm IS2 II
Maximum aperture F4.0 w/ IS
Minimum aperture F22
Lens construction 21 elements in 14 groups
Diaphragm blades 8
Image stabilizer 4-stops tested AF actuator Ring USM (full-time manual focus built-in)
Filter diameter 82 mm
Dimensions (dia x len) 88.5 x 112 mm
Weight 730g EST.

I looked (not very hard) for a link to the thread. Please post it in the forum for proper credit if you can find it.

Canon Rumour

If it did comeup, it will be a good upgrade to the 24-105mm f4L. Parting it with the 16-35 F2.8 II would be perfect for walkaround...

The 28-135IS now, is a damn good underated lens already ..  ( just a bit too slow on the tele end)

If this lens is for real, I can't see the rationale behind it at all.

Given today's dSLRs, the focal length doesn't really make a lot of sense. A max wide angle of 28mm is absolutely useless to the crop body cameras, so no sensible person with crop bodies will buy this at all. For the FF users, 28-135mm is an extremely flexible range, but given how FF dSLR is pretty much limited to the premium market, FF owners would likely be purchasing / already have a 70-200mm and a 24-70mm / 24-105mm already, so they wouldn't buy this 28-135 lens either.

The old 28-135 IS was really a relic from the film days. It was an affordable, general purpose walk around lens designed for the 35mm silver halide days of old. Honestly speaking, I am surprised Canon still hasn't retired this old workhorse as she is well past her prime.

If it estimates to be $1500, I think it's targeting the FF users. Mid range L lens is always a 'short' to the Canon crops' lineup.

Weighing 730g is around the same as the 24-105... And, if the rim size is 82mm but the aperture is still 4, it maybe a waste... I don't expect it will exceed the 24-70mm tough, but should be close...

24-70mm is really not suitable for Rebel user, the center of gravity is close to the zoom ring which hurts the wrist quite a bit...

Again, it's another f/2.8L vs f/4L IS fight....

For FF user, I think I will have 16-35/28-135 instead of 24-70/70-200 for daily use. They can also be easily stored in a smaller camera bag and the weights are lighter. For tele, you can easily pick the 100-400 (No more frustrations choosing between 70-200 and 100-400 when upgrading)...

Anyway, I doubt about this lens too, as the 28-135IS and 24-105L are 2 good lens at low cost already.

new 24-70L II will make more sense, as that lens is many yr old now, (still good) but the Nikon/Sigma/Sony one are all good and newer.

28-135IS II will make sense too, the best all round zoom lens from the film time..  ^_^

if they have time, come out with a 24-70L IS 好過啦. Rebel user shouldn't use 24-70L anyways. 17-55 lighter, smaller and similar IQ at less $. 24-105L is more than enough on the tele end for a crop.

Anyways, just rumor.

A 28-135 f2.8 non-IS will be more attractive to me, haha!

It's 99.9% you will not see the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L IS in the upcoming 2 years...
