Passengers argue BC Ferries bosses' pay should be cut

TSAWWASSEN (NEWS1130) - BC Ferries expects to lose $40 million this fiscal year and plans to cut 400 sailings to offset losses. At the Tsawwassen ferry terminal this morning, the dollar figure and the proposed solution are baffling passengers.
One trucker tells us he paid $470 for this morning's crossing, a cost he says has gone through the roof in recent years. While he's been asked to pay more, he wonders why the big ferry bosses aren't taking a pay cut or staffing levels aren't revised to help make the budget.
"I think the biggest problem that they've got is that they've got a lot of people. I know they're all certified, but they've got a lot of people that work in the kitchen in a job where they would probably be getting paid a lot less if they weren't on the BC Ferries."
But then he says he doubts his boat will leave full this morning, so he says if the daily sailings to Nanaimo are reduced by one a day, he could probably live with that.
"There's something wrong someplace... there's something wrong in management," says another man. "I think years ago, we should have had a bridge crossing. This is ridiculous, that we've lived here in BC all of these years and put up with this ferry system."
BC Ferries says a reduction in services is needed to deal with a reduced demand. Many passengers say they'd sail more often if it was more affordable.
