By now, it is clear that the US only handed the administrative rights, but not the sovereignty of Diaoyu islands and Ryukyu islands(Okinawa) to Japan.
It looks like Japan's claim is getting more and more shaky,
1) China has the earliest historical claim.
2) Current international marine laws would agree that Diaoyu islands is geologically an extension of Taiwan which itself is an extension of China's continental shelf. Geologically, Taiwan and the Diaoyu islands are of the same type. There is an ocean trough between Diaoyu islands and Ryukyu island's(Okinawa).
3) Based on the international 50-year standard "statute of limitations" for claiming possession of a territory, Japan certainly has no effective control over Diaoyu islands as both the PRC and ROC have disputed Japan's claim of sovereignty for decades.
China/Taiwan ships are entering 12km of Diaoyu islands whenever they want.
As this argument goes on, even Japan's claim of Ryukyu island's(Okinawa) sovereignty is questionable. |
